Took a little time out from the Carew to catch a couple of games at Bill Barber.
S. Torrance 0 0 0 0 0 0=0-0-0
Edison 2 0 0 2 2 x=6-9-0

Not a very good game but nice to see Sammy Cordova toss a no-hitter. She struck out 7 and was a 4th inning walk away from a perfecto. It didn't take long for Edison to get on the board. Karley Wester led off the 1st with a bunt single and stole 2nd. O'Connor singled up the middle for an RBI and also stole 2nd. Hickman singled to RF and Africano got an RBI single to LF. THe score remained 2-0 until the 4th. DeMarco led off with a double to LF and Feuerstein singled her home. Sherman reached on an E-7 and Ali Wester's ground ball got the run home. In the 5th doubles by Hickman and Africano and a single by Feuerstein accounted for the final 2 runs.

Cordova has to settle for a 1 hitter with 1 walk but also strikes out 10. Edison again had a good 1st inning. K. Wester doubled and came home on O'Connor's double. Three straight Wilson errors accounted for 2 more. The Chargers loaded the bases with 0 outs in the 3rd on singles by Hickman and O'Connor and a walk to Plaza but the next 3 hitters went out in order. Edison broke it open in the 4th with the help of 2 more Wilson errors. After the errors K. Wester got a bunt single to load the bases. Hickman then cleared them with a double to center. Two outs later Africano beat out an IF hit to finish the scoring. In the 5th Wilson scored a run only to have it taken away from them. An IF hit and a BB put 2 on. A fly to RF advanced the runners and a bad relay from 2nd allowed the run to score. However on appeal it was ruled she left early and the run was negated. Tahti walked to lead off the 6th and scored on O'Connor's triple. A ground out got the final fun of the game home.

It didn't seem like the game should be this close but Edison shook up their defense and the results were a little shaky. There was also some adventurous base running and controversial calls, particularly by the base ump. The 1st 3 plays of the game went to new 3rd baseman Karley Wester, who fell over on the 1st one, made a beautiful diving catch on the 2nd, and almost started a double play on the 3rd. She started the Edison half of the 1st by reaching 2nd on what was either an E-6 or a bad-hop hit. She was sacrificed to 3rd and scored on O'Connor's ground out. The Panthers got a hit off Sammy Cordova in the 2nd, as many as she had allowed in 2 games Saturday. She would allow 5 for he game but only 1 left the infield.

In the 2nd Africano reached on an error and after a force out and stolen base Plaza beat out an infield hit and Feuerstein got the RBI on a bad hop single. The Chargers were again in scoring mode in the 3rd. Hickman singled, stole 2nd, went to 3rd on the bad throw and scored on a ground out. Talataino then doubled down the LF line and came home on Africano's single up the middle. Both Wester girls singled in the 4th and both were called out for alleged baserunning infractions. Hickman kicked off the 6th with a single up the middle but was thrown out trying to steal. This became regretful when Talataina and Africano followed with singles. In the 6th, Cordova gave up her 1st runs of the tournament. A single, combined with an E-8 followed by a double led to 1 run and a couple of ground outs got the 2nd home. With their lead cut to 2 the Chargers staged a 2-out rally in the 6th. Ali Wester got a bad-hop single, stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on a bad throw by the catcher. K. Wester got an IF hit and stole 2nd but the score remained the same.

La Canada 0 0 0 0 0 1 0=1-4-1
Fountain Val. 0 0 0 0 0 0 0=0-0-1

If you like your softball old school this was the game for you. La Canada's Lauren Cox and Fountain Valley's Cerissa Rivera squared off in a classic pitching duel. 8 of La Canada's 1st 9 outs came on Ks and 7 of Fountain Valley's 1st 9. Cox ended with 11 strikeouts and Rivera with 13. La Canada did put 2 runners on base in the 2nd on a bunt single by Ogden and an E-3 but couldn't move them up. After that nobody put more than 1 on in any one inning. La Canada changed that and broke the tie in the 6th. Horner doubled off the left fielder's glove and with 2 outs Monroe got the game-winning hit to bring her in. La Canada threatened again in the 7th on a single and a walk but couldn't score. Cox retired the side in order in the 7th including the last 2 on strikeouts.

After my one tournament got rained out I headed down to Bill Barber to see how they fared. Everything got pushed back 2 hours but the ground crew did a great job and around 4:00 we were ready for the semis.

Cox vs Cordova

Despite Lauren Cox coming off a no-hitter against Fountain Valley, that game was only 1-0 and Edison beat FV 9-0 earlier in the year. Plus it was D1 against D5 but as they say that is why we play the game. Edison put 2 runners on in the 1st but could not score and did the same in the 2nd (twice) but the rally was short circuited by a runner thrown out stealing. La Canada put 2 on themselves in the 2nd but Cordova struck out the side. In the Edison 5th Ali Wester doubled and was sacrificed to 3rd. Two walks loaded the bases but Cox struck out Hickman to end the inning. The Chargers tried to end it in the 7th. With 2 outs Sherman singled as did O'Connor and they advanced on a wild pitch. Hickman was hit by a pitch to load the bases but Cox again wriggled free. They finally got to her in the 8th as we went to the ITB. They decided not to bunt and it worked as Africano bounced an RBI single up the middle. Plaza walked and Feuerstein came through with her biggest hit of the year a 2-run double to CF. Cox got the next 3 batters but the damage had been done. Cordova finished with 11 strikeouts, including the last 6 batters in the game.

The 2nd semi figured to be a barnburner and it didn't disappoint with Taylor McQuillin tossing a no-no.

McQuillin vs Blanco

With 2 of the finest young pitchers around runs figured to be at a premium and so it played out. Through the 1st 3 innings there were no hits and 11 strikeouts. That changed in the 4th when Palomino ripped a 2-2 pitch over the RF fence. Alysha Everett made a great diving catch in the 5th to keep the no-hitter alive. McCollum replaced Blanco and gave up a run in the 6th. Again Palomino was the chief culprit as she led off the inning with a double to left and scored on Gusiff's single to left. Marina went out in order in the 6th as McQuillin recorded her 12th and 13th strikeouts.

Mission Viejo had to be the clear favorite and it looked like they were going to run away with things but Edison is a spunky bunch and came through with a dramatic 7th inning comeback.

McQuillin vs Cordova

The Diablos jumped to a quick 3-0 lead though 2 of the runs were unearned. A Everett single an error and a passed ball put runners at 2nd and 3rd in the 1st and Palomino singled them both in. The chance of another no-hitter was destroyed early as K. Wester dropped a bunt single. She was then thrown out stealing 2nd on a horrible call and the Edison coach was ejected for arguing. What kind of a$$hole throws the coach out in the 1st inning of the championship game? I made a comment and was warned I could join him if I didn't watch out. Mission Viejo extended their lead in the 3rd as Everett singled and went to 2nd on a passed ball. They bunted her over but the 2nd baseman dropped the throw at 1st. Palomino got her 3rd RBI with a single to RF and it looked to be all MV. But Jessica Plaza said, "Not so fast." and hit a monster HR over the LF fence. THe Chargers did put 2 on in the 6th but couldn't get a clutch hit. Sherman led off the 7th with a bunt single and Feuerstein singled to RF. Talataina was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring up Ali Wester. She is primarily a slap hitter but this time she slapped it all the way to the LF fence for a walkoff double and 3 RBIs.
