CIF Playoffs

Norco has been highly ranked in the state and nation all year so perhaps they could be excused for looking past a Great Oak team that had to win a wild card game just to get here. It looked great for the hosts in the 1st as 3 of the first 4 batters got hits. But they only managed 1 run and Hanna Dewey did not allow another hit and it took a 6th inning rally for the Cougars to take their only lead of the game.
Great Oak 1 1 0 0 0 0 0=2
Norco 1 0 0 0 0 2 x =3
Dewey vs Lockman

The Wolfpack got off to a quick start Danica Mercado led off the game with an infield single, went to 2nd on a ground out and scored when the 2nd baseman threw wildly to 1st. Norco seemed determined to run themselves out of rallies and the most egregious instance was in the bottom of the 1st. Reed singled up the middle and was safe at 2nd when it was ruled the SS came off the bag. Emily Lockman singled to right but Reed was thrown out at the plate. Koenig picked up the RBI with a single to CF and Goodwin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Just when it looked like Norco was going to break it open Wolfpack catcher Kayla Gloady picked the runner off 2nd. She ran to 3rd where she was tagged out but the runner on 3rd thought she had to run and it led to an inning-ending double play. The Norco center field wall is 255 ft from the plate so when you get it by the CF you can run all day. That is exactly what happened for Savvy Ferstle as she led off the 2nd with a triple and scored on Kesslers ground out.

Norco threatened again in the 4th. Koenig walked and Goodwin was hit by a pitch. They were bunted over but Gloady picked the runner off 3rd on a possible busted squeeze. The Great Oak offense had been dormant since the 2nd but tried to make some noise in the 6th. Axton singled to RF and went to 2nd when the ball got by the outfielder who made a nice recovery and nailed her trying to go to 2rd. You never want to walk the leadoff hitter but Dewey walked E.Lockman in the 6th and Koenig reached on an error. They moved up on a ground ball and a grounder to 3rd got the run in when the throw from 3rd was a tad late. Samsoe then provided the sac fly for the go-ahead run. Great Oak got a runner in scoring position on a 2-base throwing error in the 7th but couldn't get her home.

Sammy Cordova threw a 2-hitter and the Edison hitters broke out the big girl bats. They talied 19 hits and clubbed Canyon into submission 13-0. There were plenty of offensive heroics to go around. Casey Africano was 3-4 with 3 RBIs. Carissa Sherman was 3-5 with an RBI. Karley Wester went 2-4 with 2 RBIs. Mercedes O'Connor was 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Maddie Hickman was 3-5 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Jessica Plaza blasted a big 2-run HR.

Canyon 0 0 0 0 0 0 0= 0- 2-2
Cordova vs Hilburn

The Chargers threatened in the 1st. K.Wester was hit by a pitch and O'Connor singled up the middle but Plaza fell victim to 2 consecutive change-ups and struck out. In the 2nd they would not be denied. Hickman led off with a single to RF and advanced on a wild pitch. With 2 outs Sherman beat out an IF hit to score the run. A walk to Plaza and a single by Africano put 2 on in the 3rd but they couldn't score. They rallied with 2 outs in the 4th. Sherman singled to CF and stole 2nd. A.Wester followed with a single to CF. They had Sherman at the plate but the catcher couldn't hold on to the ball. The no-hitter was broken up in the 4th on a Stowe single.
O'Connor led off the 5th with a double and came home on Africano's single. She also scored on Hickman's double.

Things started to get out of hand in the 6th. Sherman led off with a single and stole 2nd. A.Wester walked and they pulled a double steal. K.Wester singled to RF for an RBI and O'Connor doubled over the CF's head for 2 RBIs. This time Plaza was waiting on the change and powered it over the LF wall. Hickman doubled over the RF's nead and Feuerstein beat out an IF hit but no more scoring. Swearingen singled in the bottom of the 6th for Canyon's 2nd hit of the day. The Chargers weren't finished scoring. Demarco reached on an error, stole 2nd and came home on K.Wester's single to center. O'Connor singled to left, Plaza walked to load the bases and Africanp singled up the middle to cash in 2. With 2 outs Feuerstein singled in the final run of the day. Cordova walked 3 while striking out 7. Edison will meet Orange Lutheran on Thursday in the quarter finals. The Lancers accounted for 1 of Edison's 4 losses earlier this season.

The Edison Chargers are the hottest team in Orange County. In fact at the top level they are the only team still standing. Sammy "Lights Out" Cordova has yet to allow a run in post-season and the offense is at their clutch-hitting best. Casey Africano was 2-4 with a double, HR and 2 RBIs. Karley Wester was 3-4 with 2 runs and Jess Plaza hit a big 2-run HR. They avenged their 1st loss of the season in taking down Orange Lutheran 6-0.
Edison 2 0 2 0 2 0 0=6-10-0
O LU 0 0 0 0 0 0 0=0-6-0
Cordova vs Vecvanags

Edison took an early lead. A.Wester singled to LF and K.Wester singled to center. They sacrificed them over and with 2 outs Africano belted a double over the RF's head to drive them both in. In the 2nd Osias got a second chance after her foul pop was lost in the sun and came through with a double but Cordova got 3 ground outs with no damage. K.Wester led off the 3rd with a single to right and Plaza hit it half way to Anaheim for 2 more runs. Osias came in to pitch the 4th and walked 2 batters but a potential sac fly wasn't quite deep enough and the runner was thrown out at the plate. O'Connor got a 1-out single in the 5th but when she overslid 2nd base on an attempted steal she was called out. But they walked Plaza intentionally and Africano made them pay with a HR just in front of the scoreboard. Hickman and Feuerstein followed with singles but Cordova struck out to end the inning. The Lancers used a Hall single and Osias BB for a mini-threat in the 6th but Cordova got a K and line out to close them out. The Lancers came back again with 2 outs in the 7th on a Gornick IF single and one up the middle by Taylor but a ground ball ended the game. Edison will host Corona Santiago in the semis on Tuesday.

Santiago 0 0 0 0 4 2 0=6
Edison 0 0 1 0 0 0 3=4
Romero vs Cordova

Edison hadn't allowed a run in the playoffs but Santiago had just beaten 2 highly ranked teams and was out to repeat 2011's late season charge. Edison wasted a big chance in the 2nd. With runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out and a 3-0 count on Jessica Plaza. But Romero got the count to 3-2 and induced a pop up. Then with runners on 2nd and 3rd she struck out Africano to get out of the inning. They were more successful playing small ball in the 3rd. Sherman singled off the shortstop's glove, stole 2nd and went to third on a ground out. Karley Wester brought her in with a sac fly to take the lead. Santiago used an error and a walk to put 2 on with 0 outs in the 4th but Cordova got a force and a line drive double play to escape. The Sharks had only 1 hit entering the 5th but made up for lost time. Matiko led off with a single was bunted over and scored on Mowatt's double over the left fielder's head. Then came the turning point of the game. Abacherli hit a routine grounder which K. Wester fielded in front of 3rd base. Wester has only been playing the position for half a season and instead of looking the runner back to 2nd she started to throw to 1st. This would have been fine but someone yelled that the runner was coming. She looked back but it was too late to get her and she ended up losing the runner at 1st as well. Orozco hit a ground ball that would have been the 3rd out but instead drove in a run. Rodriguez then hit a 2-run HR and what should have been a 1-1 score was 4-1.

A.Wester and K.Wester both singled with 1 out in the 5th but Romero got O'Connor and Plaza. Hernandez got her 3rd hit and 2nd double to lead off the 6th. Maybe Cordova was shaken by the play in the 5th or maybe the Santiago hitters had just figured her out but 10 of their 11 hits came in the last 3 innings. Mantiko singled to left but Africano threw out Hernandez at the plate. Vargas singled in 1 run and Mowatt ripped one off the RF fence for another. With 2 outs in the 7th the Chargers decided to go out with a bang not a whimper. K.Wester singled to LF and in her final HS at bat O'Connor just cleared the RF fence for 2 runs. Then in her final HS at bat Plaza hit it high over the CF fence. Four senior hitters in a row and the 1st 2 hit it out. Sadly for Edison fans Africano was robbed of a base hit by a diving catch in CF. Edison went 0-6 with RISP and that turned out to be 1 stat they couldn't overcome.

Chino Hills 0 0 2 0 0 0 1=3-7-1
S. Torrance 0 0 0 0 0 0 0=0-2-2
Innamorato vs Snodgrass

On paper the D3 title game figured to be a mismatch. Chino Hills had been #1 in the division all year and was ranked 8th in the state. South Torrance had to win a play-in game just to get in the main draw. But that, as they say, is why they play the game. Neither side had a hit until there were 2 outs in the Huskies 3rd. Parks managed an IF single and Snow doubled to right. An E-4 led to 1 run and a bad throw by the catcher on a stolen base attempt gave Chino Hills a 2nd gift. A single and a sacrifice got a runner to 2nd with 1 out in both the 5th and the 6th but the Huskies couldn't come up with the big hit. South got their 1st runner to 2nd in the 6th on a Kissling BB and Meyer single but that was their threat for the game. Chino Hills got an insurance run in the 7th. Martinez, Gumz and Blando each singled to produce the final score.
