I was standing in line at the local deli waiting to order lunch today when I overheard a tie-dye clad dude in front of me talking about ultimate frisbee. I chuckled to myself as I thought about the last time I remember playing that game.

It was decades ago when I was invited to a party where the host had rented out a park with a huge field. Naturally, Mr. frisbee shows up in his VW microbus and a duffle bag filled with various types of specialty frisbees eager to start up a game of ultimate disc. The really insufferable part was listening to him do a pregame tutorial on the rules. So after that he volunteers to be a captain and my friend volunteers to be the other captain (much to my relief he picked me first) and we split the boys and girls evenly into two teams.

We then proceeded to open up a can of whup-ass on them. The guys on our team were slightly more athletic and probably less stoned then their guys but their girls were completely overmatched by ours. Even the disc gods were on our side that afternoon as the perfectly timed cross breeze seemed to always come up and direct the disc into the awaiting hands of our team. The really funny part was Mr. frisbee's reaction to the developments as they proceeded, he became more animated and anal-retentive about rule interpretations as the game progressed and our reaction was always just, "ok, whatever." We even offered several times to make trade-offs of players and start over but he was the only one out there determined to continue with the teams as originally picked. Seeing self-styled laid back hippie dudes exhibit non-laid back behavior always seems to amuse me to no end and my friend and I laughed for weeks about this afterwards.

So with spring rapidly approaching, what tales of lawn or beach glory do any of you have?

Not exactly a "finest moment" thing ... but a great memory none the less ... Ball team I played with for years had 2 team/team family picnics per Summer paid for by our dues ... there were always two volleyball nets set up ... one over the pool and one in the grass ... stationed strategically between the two volleyball areas were the kegs ... fun times ... there were horseshoes also, but 40 feet was usually farther than I could see let alone throw ...

I was in middle school playing wiffle ball at a friends house. 2 on 2. Before the pitch, I pointed to the light pole across the street. Pitcher threw the ball, I swung and made contact. The ball flew and hit the light. I was amazed. That had to be my greatest wiffle ball moment.
It's better to keep your mouth shut and look like you're stupid......
than to open it and remove all doubt.

Does pocket pool count as a leisure sport?

DD was in 5th grade and I had to chaperone her at overnight girl scout camp. One of the classes they had there, was some guy showing the moms how to throw an ax at a bull's eye. All the mom's made some really pitiful attempt and I was last. I nailed it. Pretty funny.

While I suppose pocket pool would qualify as a leisure sport I'm sure I don't want to know what Skarp's greatest moment in it was.

Nice ax story Tucson, for some reason I'm getting a visual of a bunch of emasculated men shuffling off into the corner to play pocket pool after you nailed the bulls eye.

Say Amy, just out of curiosity, how far can you throw an ax ? Just in case, I get to come through Tucson sometime to meet the family.
