The thing I always think of when these folks get sentenced is that IF the judicial system considers the affects of the crime, then it should take into consideration that these crimes may well have a pyramid affect. How many child molesters were themselves molested as children. So one molestation can potentially result in countless victims and go on for generations. Is there a crime more deserving of the death penalty? Death, mandatory chemical castration after a lengthy term or don't let them out.

Umm...yeah. But not before making him suffer horribly.

Getting away with it is a separate issue.

What I don't get is why these guys get such light sentences? And why, after it's been shown that they are very likely to get out and do the same thing again, aren't the sentences much much longer?

Is there a child molester advocacy group out there fighting for their rights, or sentencing leniency?

I just don't get why these guys aren't locked away forever. It's mind boggling.

Yes, its called the ACLU. I had a friend for 19 years, a liberal democrat, we had a lot of good conversations. He joined the ACLU, waved the card in my face. I have talked to him twice in the last 16 years. And that was too much.

But what justification is there to let these animals back out so they can continue preying on our children? How do they get laws passed? How do they get judges to play along?

Many judges subscribe to a rehabilitative, as opposed to retributive, theory of justice. Law schools preached it for years (and still do).

Reagan, with 3-strikes and other measures, moved things back to the retributive side. In fact, crime (specifically the massive increases in crime and recidivism that resulted from a "compassionate" justice system) was one of the key issues that led to Reagan's landslide election victory.

I used to live in Antioch, not too far from this location. We moved due to traffic, and Antioch is not the town/city it used to be. Not good. I haven't heard of any leniency group though. I say "Get a rope"...

Update: Note how the neighbor's property is now part of the investigation. Gee, ya think?

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Over the weekend, authorities also roped off a next door neighbor's backyard where Garrido once lived in a shed. Neighbors say he once worked as the property caretaker and helped out an elderly man who lived there several years ago.

Investigators also cleared brush from the squalid backyard compound of tents and sheds where Garrido and his wife lived and allegedly hid Dugard and her two daughters, now 11 and 15. Police say Dugard had the children with Garrido.

The secrets of the Garrido home began to surface early last week when Garrido arrived for a meeting with his parole officer with his wife, Dugard, now 29. and the two girls. Authorities say he confessed to snatching Dugard in 1991.

So he confessed in 1991 and it took them 18 years to find him?

He didn't get a light sentence - the feds parolled him after only 10-1/2 years of a 50-year sentence. He abducted Dugard about 3 years after he got out of prison.

"In 1977 Phillip Garrido pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and rape of Katherine Callaway...who has publicly identified herself as his victim."

"Garrido was arrested and months later pleaded guilty to kidnapping, rape and sodomy, receiving concurrent sentences of 50 years on federal charges, 5 years to life in Nevada. The feds parolled him after in 1988. He was transferred to Nevada and served an additional several months in prison in Carson City, then released to Antioch, California under the supervision of federal parole officers."
