G, could not agree with you more.....most, if not all, pols are in it for one or more of three things: money, power, and sex...the times of helping others is long gone....no matter what letter the pol has after his/her name, he/she is in it for one of the above and not to help others.....

I believe you're right about 'power' though and holding onto it. The libs have perfected the system and look where our great cities are heading? Bankruptcy! It's a never ending cycle of dependency...votes...money, and then let's do it all over again.

The real coming nightmare is the unfunded pension plans of this country's federal, state, city, county and local governments. This amount will dwarf all the other bail-out amounts that the goverment has been pouring out of their money faucet. Having spent a large part of my career working in that area for the evil profit seeking corporations, I know that the evil corporate businessman would go to prison for promising pensions for which there were no funds.

The government pension program is a ponzi scheme to out-ponzi everyone - my guess is that Bernard Madoff studied the government model and just tried to follow it. Now he is in prison for life plus a couple more lifes and the federal actuaries are still ... probably waiting to start receiving their pensions.

The problem with alternative energy is still economics. I read that for solar or wind, don't remember which, to become cost effective oil would have to be at 600+/barrel.
If oil was produced by the earth why would we think this process has stopped? Who's to say that instead of there being a finite amount of oil that we will run out of that it is not a resource that continues to be replenished. It appears that every time they say we are running out a new large undiscovered oil field is found.
Maybe fossil fuel is renewable energy.

Fossil fuel is renewable energy ... problem is, we'll all be fossils by the time it renews ... I think the reason why they keep discovering new oil fields is because the ones they are currently in are playing out ... either that or Exxon keeps dumping it off the coast of Alaska and getting off scott free while they make profits ...

Proven oil reserves are absolutely massive...centuries worth. Some of it is more difficult to extract, being in the form of shale or tar, but it is there.

Like Spaz said, the problem with alternative energy is the economics. It can't compete with oil on either cost or the amount of energy returned for the energy invested. This will certainly change in the future, as oil becomes more expensive to access, and overall technological advances (from better batteries, to superconductivity, or what have you) make alternative energy sources more feasible.

In short, alternative energy doesn't work without both a profit motive and a competitive advantage, and there's nothing the government can do to shoe-horn those into existence decades before extant conditions allow for them.

At that price, alternative energy is very attractive. Take a train through Germany and France and note all the govt subsidized solar panels on all the roofs.

The O man plans the same, except he and the libs are calling it 'cap and trade' instead of 'new taxes'....and before long... you and I will paying for everyone's govt subsidized "alternative energy".

Of course they are. Nothing works without a free market, and certainly nothing that requires advances in technology. The whole question is moot without it.
