Nope. I was merely trying to initiate (or instigate, if you prefer) a discussion with the umps on here about why they immediately pounce on anyone anywhere who dares observe that the umpiring at a game or event may have been less than perfect. Several recent threads had highlighted that tendency.
I was successful (sort of). But I honestly didn't anticipate the vitriolic backlash from the teacher cabal. Although I guess I probably should have (I did put them in the title for a reason!). Turns out that teachers so intolerant of criticism that they can't even tolerate criticism about their intolerance of criticism.
Besides, if anything I have been a model of restraint in this thread. Those silly rabbits kept trying to bait me into a discussion about whether teachers (and their union, lobby, policy preferences, etc.) actually deserve criticism.

I'll weigh in on your assertion about teacher. I've been one for a while now. Yes, some of my colleagues should be out. No one can dispute that OR the fact that tenure in some districts has made allowances for mediocrity. In my particular district, we have “remediation” which is a process that is both embarrassing and effective for those teachers forced to participate. I know since I’m one of the Master Teachers others are referred to. I’m very uncomfortable in that. Also, your assertion on teacher martyrdom has some merit for a select few. Most of the teachers I know teach because they think that they can make a difference. Personally, for me, we took a pay freeze this year. Our school district is the only school district in our county that is in the black. I’ve thought about asking the local clerks for last year’s prices since … OK so a little martyrdom there.
For those that cry foul about the teacher’s work year, I’d suggest that in the past, your cause might have merit. However, such is not the case at least in my state. When school dismisses, we have to go to college to get our CPUs or to institutes throughout the summer to get our CPDUs. This is all part and parcel of our state attempting to meet the “No Child Left Behind” requirements. Note, I’ve attended few of these mandatory sessions that has made me a better teacher. Our government has simply made more hoops for teachers to jump through in order to keep our jobs. Failure to do so will cause us to forfeit our teaching certificate. Skarp, I’ve taught a few decades and yet, I’m out the door and my family loses all if I fail to meet these requirements. My point in that teachers no longer have that job security they once had.
Few think about the fact that 12 percent of all teachers are threatened by students and/or parents and 4 percent of those are physically assaulted. These are 1999-2000 numbers. In fact, from 1997-2001 there were 473,000 physical assaults on teachers nation wide with some 48,000 categorized as "serious violent crime." That would include rape, sexual assaut, use of weapons...In an interview with Matt Lauer, Jolieta Berry described what it was like to be attacked by one of her students and that it was so premeditated that video of the assault was taken and then posted on MySpace. After the assault and interviews of the students in the class, Berry was admonished by the Principal. Only the resulting video of the game showed those same students actively cheering that attacking student on. Skarp, I wonder how many people in your profession are attacked by their clients?
Well, I could go on which is your point. I make no apologize for what I do. I think I do make a difference. I make a living. I’m happy. Every morning I wake up and can’t wait to teach. I feel the same way about coaching. Scarp, I think that I’m good enough that I can even overcome your children’s genetic drawbacks.
A simple list of what I am expected to know:
What I am expected to do/know:
1. Know all of the kids in this school on a first name basis.
2. Know all of the kids I have ever taught. They will come up at some time and ask, “Do you remember me?” If you don’t, you really disappoint them.
3. Teach pride.
4. Modify behaviors
5. Know signs of abuse and report them. (Skarp do you have any idea what it is like to see an abused child, realize that you are going to have to turn that parent in, know that that parent will be back in that home that night AND know that the child will be punished more. Yet, as a Mandatory Reporter, if I try to intervene on my own and not report, I can go to jail.)
6. Know all of the covert messages printed/worn or otherwise displayed in school
7. Fight the war on drugs.
8. Raise student’s self esteem while wondering if there is a gun in the backpack.
9. Maintain a “safe environment”
10. Promote cultural diversity and be sure that I maintain gender equity.
11. Continue my education or lose my job.
12. Know all current trends in education but also know trends in social behaviors.
13. Know that my presence will place students in awe so I must be a role model knowing that I’m not even a good person.
14. Know all of the educational web-sites and all of the off limits sites.
15. Decide who is potentially dangerous in class
16. Decide how to handle medical emergencies in my class with special students.
17. Make sure all of my students can pass the state test. If I fail at this, I can be subjected to remediation.
18. Make sure all parents are aware of anything lacking in their child’s academic endeavors.
19. Know who is dating whom and who has had a bad day.
20. Make sure that I closely monitor anything remotely close to prayer in school or the use of the word ### because some parent might be suggesting that I am teaching religion and file a lawsuit. Know that many parents include the Pledge of Allegiance as forced prayer.
What I know:
1. I can’t do it all.
2. In order to help someone, they must first want help.
3. YOU CAN’T FEED A ROCK!
4. Know that sometimes I feel like the greatest failure I know.
5. Know that there will come a day when my kids hurt and I will hurt!
6. Bruce Springsteen once said, “There comes a time when you have to stop dreaming of the man you want to be and start being the man you have become.” (Despite how I feel, I have to be there for my students!)
7. I KNOW THAT I AM A MEMBER OF THE GREATEST PROFESSION IN THE WORLD! I DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!
Skarp again, you got what you wanted. However, you didn’t teach at a school that had SWAT Teams protect your school for the last 45 days because some lunatic wrote on all of the public restrooms throughout the state that he/she was going to come to your school and kill everyone. Skarp, you didn’t coach some of the best kids you’re ever going to know in games with police dogs walking the perimeter of your ball field while everyone that entered the place was frisked. Yes, teachers think that they are valuable, want compensated for it and yes, some are bitter. MOST ARE EXCEPTIONAL AT WHAT THEY DO. JMHO!
