My rigs run from a ultra-light with 4 lb test to a penn 4/0 that I use for shark fishing from the beach. When I was a kid, we would use spinning reels, (garcia 300) 6 lb test line and fish for alligator gar - that was our biggest fish in the rivers around here, the largest we landed was 6.4, 112 lb alligator gar on 20 lb test using a penn #9, lots of fun.

Donnie .... Have you never caught a tuna or just never on of those 'giant tuna' ... ? If not ... even the 40-60 pounders are great fighters ... there is a 36 hour trip off of VA on a party boat for like $300 in the Fall if you get up this way ... or a 24 hour trip off of NJ for about the same $ ... I didn't go this past year because of the economy ... maybe next Fall ... ;)

G, I caught tuna in the gulf some years back, as I recall, they were in the 30-35 lb area, then I caught a large wahoo and then got into barracuda. Barracuda was a friggin blast, its like top water fishing with a 50 lb mountain trout with very large teeth. I fish salt water a lot, my opportunity to go offshore is with my brother and a group of divers. The divers are very careful and check everything 3 times before we leave the dock. My brother is a nut who checks his fuel tank as we are getting into blue water. I spend a lot of time surf fishing.
