8th grade parents - don't let this happen to your kid

California schools are no longer requiring 8th graders to take algebra. Don't let this happen to your eighth grader, it will greatly affect how she scores on her SAT in the future. Contact her school counselor and make sure she is enrolled, regardless of what bullsh*t crap they give you, you have to be her advocate.
Here we go again, tailoring to the lowest common denominator (no pun intended) in our society.

Algebra in 8th grade is really unnecessary. Nothing advances math skills like taking time out in the student's busy day of sexting each other in order to sing songs of praise to 0bama, listen to talks on how to put condoms on bananas and watch algore's movie about global warming.

Maybe math is overrated and they won't need it in college, look at these progressive courses they can take at The University of Chicago:

Star Wars XXX: A Porn Parody is just one of them, G-man, if you hurry you might get there and catch the weekend classes.

If I listed some of the class titles here on the bucket, I would get sent to the cornfield.

As a Jr. High Math teacher, I can tell you a vast majority of students are not ready for Algebra. I understand the college implications, but truthfully many are not ready and end up taking it again in 9th grade anyway. It depends on the child. My dd is a 7th grader taking Algebra, but she is a straight A gate student. If you have a student who struggles in math but works hard, it may work out. Otherwise, you create an culture where many students hate math.
