General thoughts

OK it's a Sunday night. DD is out with her guy friend (still haven't brought myself to call him a boy friend).
She texts to ask how much money is on a wild wing gift card, so that they can pay for a couple of soldiers eating there.
Now is she more like Obama re distributing money that isn't theirs or like her parents that do that sort of thing for people of uniform??
Just a little confused on how I should react..
Knee jerk reaction was ,,YOU don't own any money!!!! You do not have that privalage yet!
But I do like the thought.

My guess is that you're a good dad that taught her well and she's just doing what she thought her parents would want her to do and that you would be proud of her.

I'd say let her use it and then talk with her later to get more information and maybe make a better recommendation for next time if it's warranted.

Sounds like a great kid.

Obama redistributes money because he wants control. You buy dinner for a soldier out of a sense of gratitude and generosity.

Your daughter is emulating the latter. That is a wonderful gesture and says a lot about her, and even more about you.

The facts: 3 soldiers in uniform eating.,,,,, $50 gift card given to both of them for Christmas. Their bill tonight $30.
What they did,,,pay their bill with her debt. card, gave soldiers the gift card.
What I told them,,,,,,,,YOU don't own any real money, any money on your debt card is for vital needs.... The gift card was YOURS to spend as you wish.
The wiser choice would have been to pay your bill with the gift card and give the balance of the card to the people who serve our nation.
Instead you spent $80 dollars,,,,,, think,,, I do like the way you think, however be a little smarter or wiser, think what you do through before you do it. What you did was very respectful to them, however it showed a lack of respect to your parents and how we provide for you. When it is your own money do as you wish, when it is our money do as we wish.
They are both just seniors in HS.

PS please do not think I am nice or good,,, I hate everyone,,,,, equally. That way you can not say I discriminate.

Good economics lesson for her. I would have probably suggested she play the numbers the same way. However, in a world where more and more kids show little gratitude or respect for those who put Country before self, I would still be encouraged by the intent, even though the execution could have been done better as you illustrated.

Agree, its odd how people spend other peoples money right? Very encouraged and you should be proud that she is thoughtful, the rest is semantics right? I mean when they are little they go buy you a Birthday present with your money and you/I are grateful for the tie, sleeve of balls etc. My kid is funny this way if she sees a panhandler/Homeless person that has a dog and they are getting a couple bucks from me or I will suffer her rath (Mom taught her early), she gives her food away, volunteers at a homless shelter to take care of babies while parents learn to budget their money etc. I encourage these things in her and I am glad that others encourage this type of behavior in their kids. On the other hand she is one of the most blatent right winged little nut jobs (like me) that I have come accross. I like the balance , now if I can just get her in a college that wont ruin her we have a chance haha.

Well...as a soon to be retired Old Fart Soldier...I have never had anyone buy me a meal, which doesnt bother me...would probably bother me if they did...have had many say Thanks for my Service, but that makes me wonder, are they doing that for them? Or Me?...I'm no hero...I did my job....Heros are the dead and wounded...and the ones who came before me, and those who will step up after me...

Your Daughters heart was in the right place, I dont know the circumstances...if it was E-1s who dont make much or some COL making a mint...Dont know if they havent been home in months...going on deployment, coming off deployment...
But her heart was in the right place.
Nothing wrong with compassion...
Bible says she'll get it back 10 fold (I aint giving ya $300.00)
I'm not rich, but I'll give ya the $30.00 back

But this could be a good lesson on how democrats in government work. They emotionally see a need and want to help, instead of going into their pocket to donate money, they go into yours.

I am glad she respects our service men, you must be very proud of her.

THe only time I ever travelled in Uniform was a 4-plane trip home from Columbus, GA after Airborne school(late '1980's). It was one of the best experiences of my life- along the way people bought me drinks, shook my hand,and bought me food. It was surprising for me because many civillians were still in the post-vietnam(pre-gulf war) anti-miltary mood that was unfortunately the norm at that time.

Once while at a Buffalo Wild Wings(in Watertown, NY) I bought some drinks for some 10th Mtn soldiers- told them my story and told them that when they reach my age they should do the same for some soldiers they com across.
