A great idea of the police to do this and some credit for the guy to go do it. Knowledge and information are key to understanding and avoiding problems. Its easy to be critical until you are forced to make the same kind of decisions and understand the pressure and difficulty involved.

Policing is not one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. When taking population into account, Alaska was the most dangerous state for a police officer with 5.16 deaths per 1,000 police officers from 2008 to 2013. Arkansas follows with 3.26 per thousand officers, and Montana is third with 2.85 per thousand. Vermont is the safest state for an officer. Vermont saw no officer deaths between 2008 and 2013. Rhode Island follows with only one death since 2008, and Connecticut had four total police deaths since 2008.

Police say use of pepper spray needed to disperse crowds

Some key points:

- This morning, the Columbus Fire Division responded to 89 fires in the campus area between 12:52 and 4:44 a.m.

- Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said officers had to act quickly to disperse the crowds, which were blocking and in some instances climbing on emergency vehicles trying to respond to the dozens of fires being set throughout the campus area.

- Officers followed policy by making it clear that they were prepared to use pepper spray and tear gas if revelers did not follow orders to disperse, Jacobs said.

Orders were given over loudspeakers, and the large number of police cruisers and officers on horseback all made it clear that the crowds needed to disperse, Jacobs said.

“That’s about the least amount of force that we can use” with large crowds, she said.

- Police said the response was designed in part to avoid a repeat of riots that broke out in the campus area in 2002, after undefeated Ohio State beat the University of Michigan to win the Big Ten title and secure a berth in the national championship.

Crowds that year pelted police with rocks and bottles, set more than 100 street fires, and overturned at least 20 cars, torching many of them.

IMO, law enforcement was far more effective this morning than in 2002. They only made 10 arrests (fire related) compared to 50 in 2002 and there was far less unlawful acts. I expect they'll review what occurred and refine their approach/training for the future.

These are clear f-ups that are only troubling if there were/are no repercussions for those responsible. Interesting the lawsuit in the last article wasn't filed until 10 months after it occurred.
