to squeeze or not to squeeze

by A&&hole Coach » Tue Sep 06, 2011 6:40 pm

alright everyone. enough of the money, fraud, and other exciting banter of the past couple weeks or so.

Do you say yes to the suicide squeeze play in a very very tight game with your team or do you say swing the stick and let the chips fall where they may?

I for one say squeeze the run in with less than 2 outs, you get the ball in play and you never know where the throws are going in this game.

What do all you other fastpitch folks say? and why for or against?

If I got a contact hitter/ slash good hitter up, with less than 2 outs, Im letting them swing the stick. Bunting is a lost art these days especially from RH batters. With 2 outs, I would try a sneak squeeze and try to catch the defense napping thinking a bunt wont come with 2 outs. Obviously weak hitter who I'm not confident in (why are they on MY team?) then that all changes. Left handed batter makes it even more difficult IMO as the catcher has a clear vision of the line. Just my pennies worth.

You sometimes hear teams brag about how they have a lineup filled 1-9 with girls that can go yard. Not many teams brag about a lineup 1-9 that can lay down the bunt on command, but being able to execute small ball can turn a close game into a "W".

I say squeeze and demonstrate some coaching acumen. Of course you can only call the squeeze if all your girls are well rehearsed and able to execute... If the girl at the plate usually needs 2 to 3 tries to successfully lay down the bunt... uh oh...
No courage. No game.

Small Ball them if you can!!! If you can't better learn how!!!

The reason So Cal is always beating up on Nor Cal is lack of small ball. "Both offense and defense" Most Nor Cal teams are always looking for the big hits and don't understand you don't have to score 5 runs an inning to win. Good D and a couple runs a game will win 90%

Bunt early, bunt often and bunt when the game is on the line!

If I thought runs were going to be hard to come by then I'd squeeze. If I felt the kids could produce runs on their own I wouldn't. With that being said a decent fly ball or ground ball to the right side can accomplish the same thing. With no outs I'm probably not going to squeeze. With one out...depends.
