NCAA... Time for some changes

by Iluvblue » Mon Dec 05, 2011 1:36 pm

They cant pay for an "OFFICIAL" visit until a kid is in her Sr. year, yet 80% of players (just a guess) are already committed prior to their Sr season. This means that kids are going on "Unofficial Visits," on their dime. Which essentially makes the "Official" visits worthless IMO.

So, lets get the rules in line with the reality of the recruiting process. Make the official visits happen during kids JR seasons. Solves this problem.

Schools have now turned their "Camps" into huge fundraisers all the while dangling the carrot in front of perspective student athletes to draw them in.

We hear from so many schools that they are interested in player x, so have them come to our camp. That is great, except that i dont really believe the interest is always legit. I know that the kids the schools are REALLY interested in, they do their work and watch the kid and get them over for an unofficial visit and make offers,,, right now.

So that tells me that the vast majority of schools that want to see kids at camps are simply using that kids desire to get a scholarship as an enticement to get a free look at a kid, AND raise funds.

Time for NCAA to set a limit on what can be charged. How bout we charge these kids 20 bucks to go to the "Camp" and lets see how many players are then not asked to go to the camp.

Some things are stinking to me NCAA, and it is the players getting screwed IMO.

Had a school we were talking to about a player tell is to have her come to the 200 dollar camp. Uhm... youd be damn lucky if this player even gives you a sniff, and you want them to go your camp? yeah right.

Yeah, I agree about the camps. My DD ended up getting recruited by a school that she wanted to attend without the need of having to go to one of their camps. Maybe she just got lucky they got to see her play in a few showcases. I still have a camp credit at a different school that said the same thing that they really wanted to see her at one of their camps. Lucky for us we didn't make it and this other offer came fast track and my daughter accepted. I really hated the whole recruiting process and for a parent it consumes you and is very stressful. I would pay for a camp under $100 anything over that forget about it and a word to the wise if there's more than 40 kids forget about your kid being seen. Stick to the smaller camps that you may actually have a chance at.

I would say go to the camp if that school is in the very top of your choices.

Im curious if Football and Boys basketball have these "Camps" and if they are used in the same way?

Does football have as many "Unofficial Visits?"

I agree that the camps should be in DDs top 3 (maybe 5 at the most) schools. DD needs to tell them she is coming and that she is seriously interested in the school.

I think the benefit to the camp is the number of reps the coach can see. Alt most of the camps, DDs got taken aside and worked one on one with head coaches hitting off a tee. I think they can assess "coachability" for themselves that way better than watching a few ABs or grounders in a game. How they make adjustments, how receptive they are to the input, etc.

Older DD went to two camps, one of which she is attending. The other went to, I think 3, but the school she is attending she never went to their camp.

As usual, JMO.
I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words.

unofficial visits in football are unlimited. The number of unofficials isnt the issue in football though. Its who is really paying for them (see Lane Kiffin, Tennessee).

Snif Snif!! UH OH I smell a UT fan... HA HA My Family are die hard UT fans all alums, best way to never get invited back for dinner is say the name Lane Kiffin at the dinner table

Funny I was just on the phone with one of my players parents talking about Showcase tourneys and camps. I agree a lot of them are done as fund raisers. I am on the same page I would prob only send my DD to a camp that was under 100, at the same time I am not sure I would want the NCAA regulating how much they can charge. Just not a big fan of Big Brother Controls.
