Fall Fees and non profit questions

by Iluvblue » Tue Aug 28, 2012 1:53 pm

Every organization is different. There are very small groups with only 1-2 teams, then their are the big corporations( enter sarcasm) with 12 or more.

Their are organizations who run NO TOURNAMENTS, and there are those that run tournaments all year.

There are some who have no additional costs or requirements beyond their fees, and there are those that require you purchase team underwear (enter more sarcasm).

Organizations are different in many ways... but again, as a parent of daughters myself, the only question I cared about is this: Are the fees I am paying worth the services I am getting?

People always complain about tournament costs. As a person that pays for them, it is simple. If the person running the tourney does a crappy job (Umpires stink, fields stink, game times stink) then I will go elsewhere.

If the tourney is great, and the director is receptive to coaches suggestions, I will go back.

The sport is expensive.... period. Just ask yourself if you are getting what you paid for? if not, look elsewhere.

and I am curious if a parent cares whether or not the organization is a non profit or not??
Serious question. If it does matter to you , why?

The non profit status is very important for donations. It will be a requirement per Nor Cal ASA a well.

If you are interested in which Org lost its non profit good to the set non profit website and look up the major Orgs n you might be surprised who it is.

This was copied from the ASA website.

Public Inspection Rules for 501(c)(3) Organizations
In return for not paying income taxes and for receiving tax-deductible contributions, Congress requires 501(c)(3) organizations to disclose the following information to the public
upon request:
 Annual returns-Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, and any Forms 990-T
 All Form 990 schedules, attachments, and supporting documents
 Applications for exemption and all supporting documents (Form 1023)
 Letter from the IRS ruling that your organization has exempt status
You can post these documents on your website and direct people there if they make requests over the phone or via email. If you don’t have the documents posted, you need to
make a copy of the forms. You can charge the requesters a reasonable fee for doing so.
If the request is made in person, you should give them copies that day. If your organization doesn’t have an office or has limited hours, the request should be made available
within two weeks.

Just so you know. When you pay fees to an organization, you can not claim that as a "Donation." It does not fall into the category of a donation when you are getting something for it... which is your kids financial liability in order to play.

A donation is when you give something and get nothing out of it. So if it is important for you for that reason, that is the wrong reason. I know lots of people that try and do claim that stuff as a donation, but it is technically not a donation for tax purposes.

I agree non profit status is important for donations but is it really very important after that. Most teams do very little fund raising with their non profit #. Like Corey said if you are using it as a write off you are not in the right anyhow. Bottom line if people are not honest they will screw you with or with out a non profit#.

My daughters team last season was 1100 per player 11 players total for 12u. Her coach for the last few seasons has been very up front in cost, I was blown away when I saw the expense sheet. For a 12u team spring summer 13 tourneys played $12,850 was the total for the season. (If you do the math the team parents only paid a total of 12,100 yet fees were 12,850) Most coaches cover expenses out of their own pocket at times I know our coach cover 750 out of his on top of paying for his own DD to play. Itemized list included field rentals, insurance, balls, tees, nets, score books, lineup sheets, first aide, tourney fees, Jerseys for new players, replacement jerseys for a few existing, org accounting fees, printing guest instructors for practice, trading pins for Westerns, on and on. You don't think of a lot of these things that need to be paid until they are actually on a piece of paper.

To answer your questions about what to most teams charge.
10s $800-1000
12s 1000-1200
14s 1000-1200
16s -18s wide range depending on #of tourneys travel etc...

Honestly even if a org was able to skim $$$ I can't imaging it could be much. It is damn expensive to put one of these teams on the field for a season.

If you know who has lost their non profit status could you just tell us. It is way to much work to go digging thru websites for non profits ;)
