Onlooker
If I read what your saying correctly your issue with GY using ASA Tournaments as his business name is that it is more like a cornering the market.
No other TD's are able to use the name ASA Tournaments which makes it more difficult to find other tournaments and TD's.
Here are the names that some of the Nor Cal ASA TD's host under Grapettes, Cal Breeze, Bit n Bit, Capitol Sports, Dugout Wars, Hard Ball North.

Act like you are a new TB coach and try a google search for ASA Tournaments in Sacramento or Northern California and tell me what is the first thing that pops up??? How many others on this list come up??? Why is that??? The name GY uses leads people to believe GY is more than just another TD. I had a coach tell me they sign up for all of there tourneys through Gary by giving him the list of what they want to attend based on what is on his site ASA T Bit N Bit Etc... Another coach mislead by the name.

Sacramento ASA allows this for a few reasons: To corner the ASA market in Nor Cal to the Roseville / Lincoln area. Why do you think almost all ASA Tournaments events are hosted the same weekend as the Grapettes events? By allowing a TD to use the name ASA Tournaments it leads coaches to Roseville / Lincoln. As new teams trickle into Stockton, Sac, Reno and The Bay Area and try to find local tourneys a google search puts you right there. People are creatures of habit and tend to return to the same tourneys if the right teams are there, If you can get them early they will most likely stay. Great marketing strategy for GY.
I am sure many of you are unaware that the Head of Sacramento ASA and GY are both on the Board of Placer Valley Tourism together. By hosting more tourneys in Roseville Lincoln area it benefits them financially. GY gets a kick back for each hotel room booked for the weekend during ASA Tournaments events, helps answer the question on why are they always in Roseville / Lincoln. Also answers the question why out of town coaches get an email from GY prior to events stating that Placer Valley Tourism would like to know where you are staying with a form for the coach to fill out.
Don't get me wrong GY has put on pretty good events and he is not the only TD in the nation that gets kick backs and deals I think what Onlooker is upset with is the assistance given to this TD by ASA.

Unfortunately YES GY does take request for pools which can end up with some pools stacked and YES unfortunately GY has shown for over a year he will give his team the easy road if possible. This will continue and teams will just deal with it until there is a better option out there. Like Blue says though, end of the day the best teams make it through Sunday.

after the first year... nobody will be fooled by doing a search for "ASA tourneys." People will know what is up, and they will choose to play in whatever tourney serves their interests' best.

Why does Sac ASA allow this?? Because there is probably nothing they can do about it, even if they wanted to.

Gary is a member of the Greater Sacramento Softball Assoc. and is listed as their tournament director for youth tournaments. We have also had this conversation last but it was the Grapettes & R & R Gold TD that were not doing things correct. I would just say be careful what you wish for as you just might get someone as bad as what you were trying to replace. My dad always told me to follow the money.

Gary runs the best tournaments in our area let's do a quick comparison Stockton why would you want to go to a tournament there bad neighborhood crappy fields horrible umpires and gate fees on top of all that. Next DF where do I start lies about what teams he has signed up gate fees and talk about someone who has bad brackets and plays favorites here is the king. NSA in our area runs a decent tournament but we as parents are tired of the gate fees and no ice chests these are public parks quit gouging the parents. :ugeek:

Arnaiz's fields are as nice as any in the area. That place is spotless. Mcnair could be better as far as the dirt, but facility is not bad. Louis park is great. So terrible fields in Stockton?????

As far as the gate fee, I dont see what the big deal is. Go watch a HS football game, and then say the gate fee is crap and you want in free. If anything, HS should be charging VERY little, yet they RIP us with entrance fees.

When my oldest was playing hoops, and the wife and my other 3 daughters would go watch her 2-3 times per week, you were talking 30 bucks per game for us to watch. Yet the HS didnt have to pay a dime for their facility.

I could care less where teams play, but please dont make it like Sac is so much better than Stockton. Stockton had the best teams every single week..... then got a little too smug and people left, but that was the only reason.

As a result, positive changes have happened where I just dont know what you can complain about as far as Stockton goes.... well except for.... well, I wont go there:)

I would argue Luis Park. I hate that place it's like playing softball in prison   just not a fan of the dugout location short backstops n the bleacher set up. As for fields tho nothing wrong with them.

I think the fields in Stockton are just as good as any fields in Sac. As for gate fees the GY tourneys are now up to 450 per tourney. They started at 425 the beginning of the year went to 435 and now 450. When you add the extra team fees along with the money he gets from the hotels in the area he is still collecting the same fee its just on the back end. As for coolers in the parks that doesn't stop teams from bringing coolers to Stockton and tailgating. Only difference I see in the 2 is how quick things are updated. A lot of changes have been made in Stockton teams should check it out...
