NorCal vs SoCal- Similarities/Differences

by triplecrown » Sat Aug 06, 2011 5:10 pm

This is top programs and several years of watching them play at all age groups***

Similarities-

Pitching- Both have very solid pitching that will keep you in games
Defense- Both have very skilled kids that make the great plays

Differences-

STICKS- NorCal team might have 1 or 2 bombers, while SoCal will have 4 or 5 girls that can go yard at ANY time, and or make you pay on a mistake.

SMALL BALL- While NorCal thnks they can small ball, they DON'T execute, SoCal will execute and make you pay with small ball skills 1 through 9 in lineup.

Numbers- I know this is the answer to the above but, the amount of kids the top teams pick from is not even close. Most SoCal Gold teams dont even have tryouts

I think the inherent differences are simply three things:

1. Population. LA County has as many people as the entire Bay Area and Sac Metro areas. Then add San Diego, Orange, And all those other counties...you get the picture. We'd need New York to be placed in NorCal to keep up with the count.

2. Weather. In NorCal it rains in December, January, and February. You can't guarantee practice time unless you have access to an indoor facility on a regular basis. Too many orgs will skip practices during this time.

3. Coaching. The coaching in NorCal across the board isn't on the same level. There are some extremely good coaches, but for the most part the coaching isn't great.

While there are some talented players in NorCal what I see is the good teams have depth. There are teams though that have one solid pitcher and are only good in the top part of the order in NorCal.
