Close or tied game, runner at 1B, zero or 1 out, decent speed for batter and runner, batter bunts.

go for lead runner at 2B or just take the out at 1B? What are the odds of getting the runner at 2B vs missing her? If she's safe at 2B you wasted the chance to get an out and they can now bunt them both to 3B and 2B.

what's your call? I have seen coaches that do both. I tend to lean towards the out at 1B.

If the offense is going to give you an out, take the out at first. Too much of a gamble going to second. It still will take a hit to score them.

If late in game, I am expecting bunt and pinching. I prefer the out an 2 and train my team to read the bunt and communicate if that play is there or not. If it is go get it, if not, take the out at first.

what he said, and add how hard/soft is the bunt, how close have your corners crashed, how well does your team execute/practice/communicate in late tense situations.
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

If it is Fall Ball, we are going for the lead runner. I want them to learn when they can and can not get the lead runner. As mentioned above, many factors go into the decision, and it isnt automatic. If the bunt was simply too good, you aint getting the kid at 2nd base no matter what you do. If your corner got the ball pretty quick, and she is an athlete with a strong arm, we go for it. The player that fields the bunt makes the decision for us, she doesnt listen for others to tell her... IMO, if they do, it is too late. They get it, turn and go for it. Only by getting some and not getting some will the player learn when they have time or when they dont.

In the past 2 weeks I have watched my 1st baseman on both 16 and 18g teams field bunts and fire to THIRD base to get lead runners. That happens because I am in their ear all game long, all practice long, and in between games about being aggressive on defense.

You dont see it much:(

if 3rd fields bunt, catcher rotates down. If 1st or pitcher gets it, 3rd goes back.

Lots of teams have LF rotate, nothing wrong with it, I just dont like having no back up if needed, so I dont use Lf .
