If it is Fall Ball, we are going for the lead runner. I want them to learn when they can and can not get the lead runner. As mentioned above, many factors go into the decision, and it isnt automatic. If the bunt was simply too good, you aint getting the kid at 2nd base no matter what you do. If your corner got the ball pretty quick, and she is an athlete with a strong arm, we go for it. The player that fields the bunt makes the decision for us, she doesnt listen for others to tell her... IMO, if they do, it is too late. They get it, turn and go for it. Only by getting some and not getting some will the player learn when they have time or when they dont.
In the past 2 weeks I have watched my 1st baseman on both 16 and 18g teams field bunts and fire to THIRD base to get lead runners. That happens because I am in their ear all game long, all practice long, and in between games about being aggressive on defense.
