USAPREPS / Nor Cal Firecrackers Tournament/Camp

by papadan » Mon Jul 01, 2013 6:36 am

Speaking from a 14U perspective, this weekend was a great event for our team. The camp on Friday probably had a few too many participants to allow for the instruction we had hoped for, but the college coaches were positive and did take the time to instruct where possible. The real value of the tournament was having college coaches in the dugout on Saturday and Sunday. They pulled kiddos aside individually, instructed them on the field, and took the time to get to know the players. By the end of each game, the College Coaches knew everyone of our players by name.

Regardless, if this translate into some sort of future contact with these coaches, the girls had a great time and had the opportunity to hear what their team coaches have been telling them for years, reinforced by the college coaches.

As with any event, I am sure there will be individuals who did not have the type of experience we had, but for our team it was great.

Just a few suggestions for future events:

1. Let the teams know what college coaches are scheduled to be with their team prior to Sat/Sun. This would allow team coaches to adjust their lineups to maximize playing time for a player who has a particular interest in school.

2. Give the girls who attend the Camp a t-shirt. In most cases when they attend a college clinic and/or camp they receive these. A $5 shirt for a $200 plus camp seems like a fair trade off.

3. Try to hold the camps where required stay and play hotels are not 35 to 45 minutes from the fields.

4. Limit the number of Pitchers in the camps. Seemed like there were almost 70 of them out there and that there was limited opportunity for instruction.

5. If there is going to be an All Star Game that costs $100 per player, make sure they walk away with something. At twenty kids per team, one game brings in $4000 (minus expenses), surely there is a little room to give the players something to commemorate their participation.

6. Don't charge a gate fee to have parents watch their daughters at a camp. Wait until the tournament to collect a gate fee.

All of the above are only suggestions, and really did not diminish our experience. However, if the above could be considered and implemented, it could enhance the overall event.

Again, we had a great time and appreciate the opportunities we had.

Well, as the president and coach on the norcal diehards 18 gold team , I can say that the USA preps organization is top notch and well run, every college they say is going to be there is actually there and the camps are well run and the all-star game is another great opportunity for the players to perform in front of colleges that are coaching the games and watching from the dugouts or stands, they also get on fields that have multiple diamonds and spread the college coaches out so that every team has an opportunity to get seen, they don't set up fields that are 20 miles apart and if you aren't on the main fields you don't get seen! they set it up so that you are on the good fields ALL THE TIME and have colleges there.
We just got back from the Lancaster event and it was awesome as usual and once again they delivered as advertised.
We have had the pleasure to attend 4 of them in the last two years and all have been excellent, we currently have 3 players signed on substantial scholarships along with 5 players that have either verbal or have offers on the table as we speak all through attending the USA preps events, they more then likely will sign in the early signing period in November.
although we attend other showcases that are well run as well, we certainly have not have had the type of customer service and as much college recruiter interest that USA preps provides, where else can you go and have 4 to 6 colleges ON the field and in your dugout? that in its self is very uncommon at other showcases.
Price and his staff flat out deliver on what they say, is there room for improvement of course but it would be small things like maybe giving out tee shirts to the campers and maybe having a skills contest, But those are small potatoes compared to what its really about and that is enjoying the showcase experience and getting these players exposure in front of colleges.

in closing I want to personally thank the USA preps organization for all you do and will look forward to attending your events for years to come.
sincerely
