Players being thrown at intentionally!

by lazyspectator » Fri Aug 23, 2013 1:55 pm

First of all, I'd like to say hello to all of you. Newbie to the forum but not to the softball world. I was recently at my niece's fall tryout, with teamX. I was sitting near the dugout, where the teams catcher was talking and laughing about throwing at another teams pitcher in one of there recently played tournaments. I couldn't believe my ears! The coach walked by and had shut that convo down. Needless to say, my niece did not go back. Does this really go on in 14u girls softball?

Why would you throw at a 13-14 year old girl?

They are competitors and competing. Not saying it's the coach calling the pitch. The girls will police themselves. Happens with the boys as well and I would agree it happens in 12's too.

I can see that, I was thinking the coach would call for it.

Intentionally throwing at a player to gain an advantage is not competing - it's admitting you don't have the talent to compete.

It better be to protect her teammates and not because they simply don't like her.

This stuff is usually taught by a dad or coach. Hopefully they also teach them how to do it without injuring the player.

It's rarely the parents of the more talented players who endorse this thuggish behavior.
