Bruins Opening weekend

Everything you want to know about the greatest game

by billysidelines » Sat Feb 11, 2012 9:58 pm

Beautiful weekend in Westwood to start the season with the Bruins (#19 NFCA/#13 ESPN) going 4-0 vs Kentucky (#13/#18) and Pacific.

Kentucky came in ranked higher than UCLA, likely off the weight of last years stunning defeat of Michigan in the Ann Arbor regional, a win that also ended Jordan Taylor's (Valencia, CA) college career. If UK is hoping for a repeat of last years run, HC Rachel Lawson has her work cut out for her as the Wildcats were no match for the Bruins opening weekend, with UCLA sweeping all 3 contests, dominating at the plate, in the circle, and in the field.

The Wildcats did their part to help out, committing 12 errors in the 3 games, but of the several stories of the weekend the biggest have to be the Bruins bats and the arrival of freshmen Ally Carda and Stephany Larosa.

Carda went 2-0 in the circle, allowing only 2 runs, on B2B HRs following several illegal pitch calls. Unfazed, she otherwise blanked her opponents throughout her appearances, and added 4 RBI at the plate for good measure.

Larosa started at 3rd base and looks to be a fixture there for a long time. She had her first college HR, a no-joke shot during Friday's 12-0 run rule victory, and has an equally strong presence on the field and in the dugout.

Among the veterans, Camuso, Schoeder, Yudin, and Fox all came up big, each hitting .500 or better, with Camuso leading with 2 HR and 7 RBI and Yudin picking up a HR and 8 RBI.

In addition to Carda's pair of wins, Jessica Hall was sharp going 1-0 with 0.00 ERA over 13 innings, and Destiny Rodino looked strong In both her appearances in relief while picking up her first win of the season.

Kellie Fox was absolutely stellar at SS, but came out late in Saturday's game limping after maybe pulling or tweaking a muscle while trying to avoid a tag at 2nd. Other than that, and let's hope it's minor, the team seemed to come through the weekend in good shape.

The coaching staff had the team ready to go, and while it's too early to predict great things for this squad, they are certainly looking like a team to keep an eye on throughout the season.

The Bruins play at LMU Tuesday and CSU Fullerton Wednesday before heading to San Diego next weekend and then on to Cathedral City Feb 24-26. Their next game at Easton Stadium is March 7 vs Michigan State? PAC 10 play opens with 3 games vs Oregon State beginning March 30th.
