Beautiful weather for the 2nd day of the Long Beach Invitational and some pretty good softball to boot.
Pitt 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 =2
OSU 1 0 2 0 0 0 x=3
Fickert vs KIng
The Panthers were a bit of a mystery team but they acquitted themselves well against Oregon St. Sevilla led off the game with a HR to left but the Beavers got it right back. Gilmore walked and Santana sliced a triple down the RF line to tie it up. In perhaps the quickest hook in history Fickert was replaced by Hall after only 2 batters and she struck out the 2nd one. In the 3rd the Beavers took the lead for good. Bouska got an IF hit and Santana doubled her home. She moved to 3rd on a grund out and scored on a wild pitch. It stayed 3-1 until the Pitt 5th. Bravo doubled to to center and scored on Sevilla's single off Beltran's glove. OSU put 2 on in the 5th on singles by Gilmore and Beltran but couldn't capitalize. When a walk and hit batter put 2 panthers on base in the 6th Kirk Walker countered with Demore who escaped with a strikeout. Pitt got runners to 1st and 3rd with 2 outs in the 7th but Demore again went to her strikeout pitch to close it out.

North Carolina had no trouble with Utah St in the 2:00 game. With 4 stitches in her tongue and a bruised sternum Jenna Kelly was not ready to play but her teammates made up for her absence.
UNC 0 0 5 2 0 0 4 =11
Utah St 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 =2
Pettica vs Bowen
Neither team did anything in the 1st 2 innings but the Tar Heels broke out big time in the 3rd. Wheeler's IF hit a passed ball and a walk set it up for Foulks HR to LF to kick off a monster game for her. Before Utah St could stop the bleeding 5 runs had crossed the plate. The Heels scored 2 more in the 4th, the key hit being Wheeler's ground rule double. Just as it appeared we were heading into run rule territory the Aggies scratched out a run on 3 hits in the 5th. When it was too late to shorten the game the Tar Heels struck again. Dickey's HR drove in 2 and Foulks single 2 more. Utah St managed a consolation run in the 7th but the game was long over.

UCLA figured to make short work of Eastern Kentucky and they did win by run rule but EKU kept it close for awhile.
EKU 1 0 0 0 0 0=1
UCLA 0 1 3 1 0 4=9
EKU managed 2 hits off J.Hall in the 1st inning but it was her defense that let her down. With 2 outs and runners at the corners Hall induced a comebacker but threw it away and EKU was on the board. After both sides went out in order the Bruins tied it in the 2nd. Camuso tripled off the CF wall and scored when the shortstop booted Fox's grounder. Hall settled down from there and allowed only 2 hits and a walk the rest of the way. UCLA took the lead for good in the 3rd. Snow and Harrison singled and Bates blasted it over the 2nd fence in CF

UCLA extended their lead in the 4th on Harrison's sac fly and really flexed their muscles in the 6th. Yudin led off with a HR to right and Carda dropped a double right down the RF line. With the Bruins up 6-1 Driver came into pitch. Snow reached on an E-6 with a run scoring. Schroeder singled and Harrison's single drove in a run. When the 1st baseman threw away the relay Schroeder scampered home with the walkoff run.

The UCLA offense can explode at any time and when Ally Carda chips in with her best outing as a Bruin it spells doom for Long Beach.
UCLA 0 4 7 0 3 =14
LB St 0 0 0 0 0=0
Jones-Wesley vs Carda
With 2 outs in the 1st LaRosa doubled down the RF line but was thrown out trying to score on Bates' IF hit. That was probably the high point of the night for the Beach as things just kept getting worse. Camuso led off the 2nd by blasting Jones-Wesley's pitch over the CF fence. Yudin then hit a ball that was either a double or an E-7 depending on who was scoring. After a wild pitch Carda singled in a run, Snow walked and Schroeder singled to load the bases. Harrison got 1 in with a sac fly and LaRosa singled in another. Carda retired the 1st 6 batters she faced and the Bruin offense came back for more.

If it is bad to walk the leadoff hitter how much worse to walk the bases loaded. With 1 out Snow singled off the LF wall for 2 runs and Carbajal took the circle. Schroeder greeted her with an RBI single up the middle and Harrison reached on an error. LaRosa found a pitch she liked and the result was a grand slam to left. The Beach broke up 1st the perfect game and then the no-hitter in the 3rd. A BB and Neal's IF hit put 2 runners on and a wild pitch moved them to 2nd and 3rd but Kimbrough grounded out to end the threat. Tiumalu pinch hit in the 4th and fell about a foot short of a 2-run HR. She should be ready to play on the Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo trip. UCLA loaded the bases with 1 out in the 5th on Schroeder's walk, LaRosa's single and Bates' walk. Camuso's ground ball got 1 run in and Fox brought in another with a single down the RF line. Yudin walked to load the bases and the walk to Carda brought in the final run. I'm sure it could not have ended too soon for Long Beach fans.

My DD said Dad. why would she throw 2 change ups in a row? We had fun watching the game with our 10u team.

Notre Dame didn't need the luck of the Irish as they broke out the hot bats and rode a magnificent performance by Laura Winter to an easy win over Oregon St.
OSU 0 0 0 0 1 0 0=1
ND 4 3 0 1 0 0 x=8
Winter vs Andreana
It was not an auspicious beginning for OSU when the first 3 batters struck out but it got worse from there. The Irish scored 4 runs before making an out. Maldanado led off with a ground rule double to left and Thornton beat out a bunt. Bunton's pop double to LF drove in a run and Miller drove one over the left fielder's head. Luckily for the Beavers it bounced over the fence to prevent a triple but 2 runs scored anyway. OSU then brought Hall in to pitch and she gave up an RBI single to Kerner but they got the out at the plate.

ND staged a 2-out rally in the 2nd. With a runner on 1st Thornton got her 2nd bunt single and Bunton deposited a pitch over the LF fence. Miller then ripped one over the RF's head before Hall got the 3rd out. Feickert took over pitching duties for the Beavers in the 3rd and retired the side in order but the Irish were at it again in the 4th. Maldanado beat out a bunt and a sacrifice and wild pitch put her on 3rd. Bunton brought her in with a bad hop single right by the SS.

With the run rule threshold reached, Laura Winter was 3 outs away from a perfect game but the perfecto, the no-hitter and the shutout were gone within 2 batters. Beltran reached on a bad throw by the SS and ended up on second. Paige Hall then played the spoiler with an RBI-single up the middle. Notre Dame couldn't get the run they needed for a mercy as neither side threatened for the rest of the game but they still emerged with an impressive victory.

CSU 0 1 0 0 0=1
UCLA 2 0 2 0 5=9
Hall vs Dowdy
On paper this looked like a mismatch but Charleston Southern hung on for awhile. Bruin bats stayed hot and Hall and Rodino turned in a solid pitching performance. UCLA was their own worst enemy in the 1st as the 1st 2 batters reached on errors. An IF hit off LaRosa's glove would have scored a run but Fox kept the ball on the infield and Hall retired the next 2 batters. The Bruins got off a to a quick start as Schroeder led off the 1st with a HR and Harrison followed with a single. Two outs later Camuso singled and Yudin bounced one up the middle for a run. With 2 outs in the 2nd the Bucs got a run with an IF single and a ball that Carda tried to make a diving catch on and went for a triple. UCLA threatened in the 2nd on Snow's single and a walk to Harrison but couldn't get them in. Hall walked a couple in the 3rd but then struck out the last 2 batters she faced.

Bates singled up the middle to start the 3rd but was called out for leaving early. Camuso walked and Yudin blasted an opposite-field HR to left. Hall struck out 2 of the 3 batters she faced in the 4th and Rodino did the same in the 5th. The only question entering the bottom of the 5th was whether CSU could be the 1st team to escape a mercy decision at the hands of the Bruins. Spoiler alert: they couldn't. Bates singled to left and Camuso to center. Yudin walked to load the bases and bring Walker to the circle. Fox greeted her with a double over the RF's head to clear the bases. Fox went to 3rd on the throw and scored on a passed ball. Carda walked and Tiumalu got her 1st hit of the year with an infield single. The SS booted Schroeder's ground ball for the walk off run.

Long Beach finally got the big win that had eluded them and Jones-Wesly pitcher her most impressive game in weeks in shutting out North Carolina 6-0.
UNC 0 0 0 0 0 0 0=0
LB St 3 0 1 0 0 2 x=6
Spignola vs Jones-Wesley
Things started out prominingly for the Tar Heels in the 1st but ended with a big goose egg on the board. Wheeler singled to right and the 3rd baseman threw away Nece's bunt but Wheeler was nailed trying to score. Foulks then apparently walked but was called out on appeal. Denio made a diving catch in RF to end the inning. The 49ers got all the runs they would need with one swing of the bat in the 1st. Kimbrough singled up the middle, DeGaetano walked and St Germain hit one deep into the center field night for 3 runs. Jones-Wesley allowed no hits in the 2nd through 5th innings but the Beach kept clawing. Neal led off the 3rd with a single and DeGaetano provided a double to bring in the run.

The 6th and 7th were exciting as teams threatened in every at bat. With 2 outs in the Carolina 6th Nece beat out an infield single, Foulkes was hit by a pitch and Dickey walked but EJW coaxed a popup to end the inning. The Beach was more successful in their half of the inning with Denio contributing a 2-run single for the final score. Carolina got a walk and hit batter in the 7th but couldn't get a clutch hit.
