IOwa St @ LMU 3-14

Everything you want to know about the greatest game

by oldNlazy » Thu Mar 15, 2012 12:30 am

These days it's news when Sam Fischer doesn't hit a HR so in that sense the day was newsworthy but the big news in game 1 was Molly Medeiros' flirtation with a perfect game.

The scoring began in the 3rd for LMU when Ahlo hit a double off the center fielder's glove. Nelson homered to center, Fischer doubled and Sarginson hit a massive shot into the screen behind left field. In the 4th they used Segura's single, a passed ball and Harmon's RBI single to extend the lead.

Meanwhile Medeiros was busy retiring the 1st 15 hitters. The only close calls were a line drive Fischer had to climb the ladder to catch and a 3-2 count to the 15th batter. This put LMU in a ticklish situation. If they score 3 runs, the game is over and Medeiros gets her abbreviated perfecto. But some of us wanted to see her get her chance at the 7 inning variety. The Lions seemed bent on ending it right there. Shuster singled to center, Fischer walked and Dutton was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pereda singled in 1 run but Pereda hit into a double play to end the inning.

The suspense didn't last long as Madison Jones worked th count to 3-2, fouled off several pitches and finally lined a single down the LF line for the Cyclone's 1st base runner. They put together a small threat in the 7th on a hit batter and a single but Medeiros retired the last 2 batters to preserve the shutout.

IT was billed as Lions vs Cyclones but Lions vs Christians might have been less lopsided. LMU broke out the big girl bats while Iowa State's offense was only offensive to Cyclone fans.

ISU actually threatened first, using a hit batter and bloop single by Miller to put 2 on with 1 out but Waldusky go t the next 2 batters to get out of the jam. Nelson led off the LMU 1st with a single and was sacrificed to 2nd. Fischer walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Sarginson singled to left to drive in a run and Pereda's single to center brought in another. Segura singled to left to bring in yet another and Alvarez had the big hit of the inning with her first HR of the year, a 3-run shot to RF.
The Lions continued to put on the pressure in the 2nd. Nelson singled off the pitcher's glove, Fischer walked and Sarginson's shot left the building right down the LF line. Segura then singled and Harmon hit her 1st HR of the year also down the LF line. THe Cyclones again put 2 runners on in the 3rd on a dropped 3rd strike and an infield hit but again could do nothing with them. LMU completed the scoring in the 3rd. A walk, fielder's choice and wild pitch put Lions on 2nd and 3rd for Fischer. Some LMU folks felt walking her intentionally with an 11 run lead showed a lack of class but that's what they did. With 2 outs Pereda made them pay with a grand slam to left. Still not finished Segura and Harmon singled and came home on a single to RF by Alvarez. The Lions sent up 3 pinch hitters in the 4th and Iowa St finally put up a zero. Both sides are to be commended for playing an error-free doubleheader.
