Everything you want to know about the greatest game

It was the Bates & LaRosa show out at Easton Stadium as they combined for 3 HRs and 7 RBIs. The Bruins only outhit the Beavers by 2 but with Bates and LaRosa doing yard duty the game was not as close as the numbers might suggest. Three of the OSU runs had something fluky about them. J.Hall allowed 5 hits and 1 ER in 5 innings striking out 6. Carda pitched the last 2 innings allowing 1 hit and a run via an IP call.

Demore vs Hall
Each pitcher recorded 2 strikeouts in the 1st but they were the only 1-2-3 innings except for the Bruin 6th. Beltran led off the OSU 2nd with a single and went to 3rd on a WP and a PB but they couldn't get her in. Bates led off the 2nd for the Bruins and belted it over the batting cages and deep into the trees. Camuso walked but Yudin's bunt resulted in a force play. Fox laid down a perfect sacrifice and everyone moved up one on a bad throw by the 2nd baseman. Carda walked to load the bases andSchroeder picked up an RBI when she was hit by a pitch. LaRosa then drove in 2 more with a single to LF. Bates again led off the 3rd and the results were the same though this one was not nearly as far.
OSU decided to play long ball too as Santana led off the 4th with a shot to left. UCLA broke it open in the 4th. With 1 out Snow doubled to center, Schroeder beat out a bunt and LaRosa hit a line drive over the LF fence about 5 feet inside the foul pole. This brought Feickert to the circle and despite giving up a single to Harrison and a BB to Camuso she escaped without further harm. Kutz led off the 5th with a single and pinch hitter Brennan doubled over 3rd base. Bouska's strikeout would have been the 3rd out but a passed ball by Yudin allowed her to reach 1st and a run to score. Santana then followed with an RBI-single to left. Carda came in to pitch the 6th and would have retired the side in order but for a Fox error. The Beavers did manage an additional run in the 7th. Gilmore led off with a double to RF, Richardson walked and they both moved up on a passed ball. Fox appeared to throw the runner out at the plate but an illegal pitch was called on Carda.

The 2nd game of the series had a little bit of everything, sun, rain, power, speed, an ejection, a good relief performance and mostly a whole lotta walks from OSU pitchers (9). Andreana didn't so much keep the Bruins off balance with her stuff as with the fact they saw so few strikes. Carda started for the Bruins but was pulled in the 3rd in favor of J.Hall who retired 9 of the 10 hitters she faced to run her record to 12-3. For the Bruins it was their 12th win in a row.

Andreana vs Carda

Carda was a little shaky starting the game giving up a leadoff hit to Gilmore and walking Santana but got Beltran to ground into a double play and Hall to pop up. The Bruins loaded the bases in the bottom of the 1st without putting a ball into play. Walks to Schroeder, Harrison and Bates set it up for Dani Yudin with 2 outs. She thought she had walked on a 3-0 pitch but the umpire called her back so she whacked one up the middle for 2 RBIs. With 2 outs in the 2nd Schroeder hit a ball that looked like it was headed for the fence but it dropped into and then out of the glove of Batayola who had just come into the game. She was charged with an error but LaRosa popped out to end the inning.

Carda must have been on a short leash or KIP may have worried about all the 3 ball counts because when Garcia led off the 3rd with a single off Yudin's glove Hall was brought in to pitch. She retired all 2 batters she faced. Harrison walked on 4 pitches to lead off the 3rd and Bates smoked a line drive but it went into the right fielder's glove. With 2 outs Yudin walked and Fox roped an RBI single to left. It was close but the catcher should really have made the play. The Bruins put 2 on in the 4th on a walk and hit batter but couldn't score.

In the 5th the rain started. It wasn't really rain, compared to Georgia-Florida, more of a sprinkle but it did get you wet and half-emptied the stands. UCLA needed 5 runs to send their fans home soggy but happy and that's exactly what they got. Camuso started the inning by smacking Andreana's pitch over the RF wall. When Yudin walked Walker had seen enough and brought in Paige Hall. She got the 1st hitter but walked Reed and Snow to load the bases. Kirk Walker apparently disagreed with some of those ball calls and he argued the point long enough to earn himself dismissal from the premises. Schroeder singled to right to drive in 2 and LaRosa singled off the 3rd baseman's glove. On a 3-0 count Harrison got a highly questionable call and on the next pitch she swung at ball 4 before finally grounding out. Bates also ran the count to 3-2 before ripping a walkoff single to right.

It was adjust your brightness control day at Easton as Oregon St came out all in orange. Maybe that lifted their spirits as they certainly outplayed UCLA all day. Not that the game was unwinnable. The Bruins fell behind, caught up, fell behind again and almost caught up again. The game ended with the winning run on 1st base. For the Bruins it was hit a HR or don't score (1 exception). Hall cruised the 1st 4 innings allowing 1 hit and 1 walk and striking out 5. In the final 3 innings she gave up 8 hits, 7 runs, 2 walks and struck ot 2. It just demonstrates the difficulty of sweeping a Pac-12 series.

OSU 0 0 0 0 3 0 4=7-9-1

UCLA 0 0 0 0 2 1 2=5-8-0

J.Hall vs Feickert

It might have been an inauspicious beginning as Feickert hit Schroeder on ther 1st pitch of the game but she was cut down stealing. The Bruins tried a 2-out rally in the 2nd on singles by Yudin and Fox. Lindvall worked the count to 3-2 but went down swinging. The Bruins had 2 long balls in the 3rd that may have been cut down by the wind; Snow to right and Schroeder to left but ended up going down in order.

Santana led off the 4th with a single to CF and was bunted over. She then stole 3rd where it looked like a good throw would have gotten her. Hall got Hall and Brenner to escape damage. All 12 runs in the game came in the final 3 innings and every inning was an adventure. Guzy led off the 5th with a single to CF and after being sacrificed to 2nd came home on Cavestany's single to CF. Garcia walked followed by a strange play. Gilmore struck out and ran to 1st when the ball eluded Yudin. Since 1st was occupied she had no right to be in the baseline but for some reason Yudin threw it and hit her in the back allowing the run to score, Santa followed with a single for the Beavers' 3rd run. By this time Bruin fans were abusing the plate umpire on his strike zone but I didn't see anything out of line. In the bottom of the inning Yudin walked on 4 pitches and Fox hit a 1-2 pitch over the fence, just to the left of the scoreboard.

Hall led off the OSU 6th with a single up the middle. Bouska fouled off her bunt attempt and Yudin made a nice diving catch. Guzy walked on 4 pitches but Hall got the next 2 hitters. LaRosa led off the 6th with a single down the RF line. Harrison sacrificed and Bates drove an RBI single to right going all the way to 3rd when the right fielder couldn't handle the ball. Maybe it would have been better had she remained at 2nd because they sent her home on Camuso's shallow liner to RF and she was thrown out from me to you.

When you make a comeback to tie or take the lead, the pitcher's first responsibility is to not let them come back but Hall couldn't get the job done. Gaqrcia blooped a single to center that Schroeder first went back on then couldn't recover. With 1 out Santana hit what looked like a playable grounder but it hit a rock or something and shot by LaRosa. Beltran was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Hall cashed in 2 runs with a single to center. Then came an example of it being a game of inches. Brenner hits a grounder back through the box. Another inch or 2 and Hall holds the runners and gets the out at 1st. In fact it goes off her glove and into CF for a 2 run single. The Bruins were down but not out. With 1 out Fox walked and Carda hit it on top of the batting cages. This brought Andreana to the circle and she immediately walked Snow on 4 pitches. Schroeder hit a little bleeder down the RF line where Garcia made a nice play to run it down. LaRosa singled to CF and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Harrison walked to load the bases but she got Bates on a fly ball to end the game.
