Sacramento St @ LMU

Everything you want to know about the greatest game

by oldNlazy » Mon Apr 16, 2012 12:14 pm

As Ernie Banks on steroids might say, "Let's play 3." Visitors ro Smith Field saw 2 good games and a blowout, an emotional senior day ceremony and a ton of walks and HRs. At the end of the day LMU won 2 of 3 to keep their conference hopes alive.
LMU 0 0 0 0 3 0 0=3

Waldusky vs Brooks
Sac St as the designated home team threatened to score in the 2nd. Navarro got a bloop single and Naaken faked a bunt and then bounced a single up the middle but Waldusky struck out 2 of the next 3 batters to escape. LMU put runners in scoring position in the 3rd without a hit. Two walks and an Illegal Pitch but they couldn't be cashed in. The Hornets got on the board in the bottom of the inning on 3 singles with Navarro driving in the run. The Lions got 2 walks in the 4th (they would get 24 for the day) but no hitting. A walk and an RBI single by Caldwell got the Hornets started in the 4th and Frye's 2 run double finished it. LMU came right back with 3 of their own. Two walks were cashed in by Kelly Sarginson with a big HR. THis brought Stroud to the circle and she got the 3rd out. LMU had 1 more chance in the 7th. Fischer was walked intentionally for the 3rd time and Sarginson also drew a walk but that was as far as they got.

Medeiros vs Stroud
The Hornets decide to roll the dice and pitch to Sam Fischer with 2 outs and bases empty and she reminded them why they had been walking her with a homer to left. Sac St tied it in the 3rd on a single by Frye and an RBI double by McCormick. In the 4th LMU cashed in Fischer's intentional walk when Pereda doubled her home. Sac St came right back to tie it on Nakken's HR. In the 6th LMU appeared to break it open. Shuster singled and while trying to walk Fischer they got one close enough to reach and she grounded into a force out. Alvarez then walked and Sarginson hit her 2nd 3-run HR of the day. But Sac St could also use the long ball as they showed in the 6th. McCormick led off with a HR and Navarro doubled Waldusky replaced Medeiros. Nakken got an IF hit and Taylor mashed a double off the wall to drive in 2. The Lions rebounded in the 7th. Harmon singled down the LF line and Nelson walked. This brought Voelz in to pitch and she uncorked a wild pitch for a run. Shuster walked, Fischer was walked intentionally and Alvarez got the run home on a force play. The Hornets got 2 hits in the bottom of the 7th but a double play put out the fire.

This was it. The last home game for Fischer, Sarginson, Ahlo and Pereda and they went out in style.
Sac St 0 0 0 1 0=1-5-1
LMU 4 2 1 0 4=11-7-2
Goldschmidt vs Voelz
The Lions scored 4 in the 1st before they made an out courtesy of 2 BBs, an error and a grand slam from Alvarez. Two more RBIs from Alvarez in the 2nd on a double. The inning featured 2 intentional walks and a regular one. With 2 outs in the LMU 3rd Harman singled, Nelson walked and Shuster got an RBI single. Down 7-0 they decided to pitch to Fischer and got her to pop up. Sac St scored without a hit in the 4th thanks to a 3-base throwing error by the pitcher. Another 2 out rally by LMU ended it in the 5th. Harmon walked, Nelson beat out an IF hit and Shuster was hit by a pitch. The Hornets were between a rock and a hard place. Do they walk Fischer to force in a run to face the player who had already hit a grand slam. They decided to pitch to her and she hit it out providing the storybook ending of Fischer's last swing in Smith Field being a walkoff grand slam. (This bit of history will have to be rewritten if they make the league playoffs.)
