Expenses at College Softball

Everything you want to know about the greatest game

by jonriv » Thu Jan 31, 2013 6:33 pm

Many believe that when their DDs go off to College their softball expenses end their- in some case that is true. Sponsorships and/or large AD budgets can do that, but in many cases that is not the case

Case in point: My DD plays for a Div III school in the Northeast

Expenses covered by the school

Uniforms
Bats
Transport to travel games
Some Meals
practice gear
uniform cleaning

Expense not covered:
cleats
gloves

Extra expenses
airfare and lodging for "spring training" in Florida
required "warm-up" jacket

What is the deal at your DDs school

They have to pay for airfare and lodging?
If so, Ouch.

Is this common in DIII?

I remember going to clinic/camps ay some Patriot League(Div I) schools that used the money raised at those camps to help pay for their pre-season trips. I do not know if this is common or not?

Both of mine are at DI schools and the only expense is a couple of fundraisers that we support. One was a magazine sale for DD2 on the East Coast and the big one for DDI is next weeked. Crabfeed with a lot of raffles and silent auctions. They usually make a great deal of money on their silent auctions.

Other than that, NADA!!

What does the money go to? What if they were unable to raise?(hypothetical)

Mine also at DIII, but other than BYOG all else is covered. Most girls BYOBat but you don't have to. The girls are expected to work athletics concessions during the fall to raise funds (and the fall sports do it in the spring) and mine called lines at the volleyball games as well - not required, but she likes doing it and her roomie is on the team.

They will be in SoCal for Spring Break, all trip expenses covered, but they will travel cheap and generally stay at the homes of alumni which is actually not bad as they'll get home cooking most nights. Those parents who are going out to watch some of the games will all chip in for a Sunday afternoon team-parents picnic.

As to whether it's common at DIII's for parents to have to supplement the athletic budget, I couldn't say other than at all the DIII's we looked into (4-5), none indicated they were expecting parents to pay for equipment or travel costs.

From the parents of players at others schools have told me(as wll as those at DDs) The amount of fundraising with current players(concessions etc..) as well as player alumni donations are key. The more active the team is with it Alumni the better. I am pretty sure the experience varies at DI schools as well (ie SEC vs Patriot)

BTW- no mention of future expenditures was ever mad at any school-never thought to ask

I'm sure it goes towards the uniforms and travel, but, I have not experienced any issues with not having enough money. DD1 is a Junior and DD2 is a Freshman. Neither one at a top DI school, but they get to play and they are getting great educations.
