Softball Wins Two Before Finally Succumbing to Springfield in NEWMAC Title Game
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Babson College softball team entered this weekend's NEWMAC Tournament play in need of five straight wins in two days in order to claim the program's third conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. After winning a pair yesterday, the Beavers earned two more thrilling victories on Sunday before finally falling in the championship game against host Springfield College, 6-2.
Babson (32-12), which defeated Coast Guard, 6-5, in eight innings and the host Pride, 4-3, in nine earlier in the day, will now hope their 5-1 record this week - including three wins over regionally-ranked opponents - will be enough to earn an at-large bid to the national tourney when the field is announced on Monday morning at 10 a.m. The Beavers entered the week ranked third in New England behind NESCAC Champion Tufts and Middlebury.
In the Beavers' first game of the day, junior Kathleen Conway pitched 7 2/3 innings to earn the win against Coast Guard, as she became the first 20-game winner in Babson softball history. The ace lefthander allowed four earned runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out eight in improving to 20-5 on the season.
Conway gave herself a lead with an RBI single in the second, and senior captain Catie Funk made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the third. However, Coast Guard erupted for five runs in the fifth, temporarily chasing Conway from the game. Junior Tess Rubega then came on in relief to get a critical third out as the Green and White trailed, 5-2 after four and a half.
The roller-coaster began there for Babson, which bounced back from the rough top half of the inning by scoring three runs in the bottom half to tie the contest at 5-5. Funk and first-year Caitie Benoit each recorded RBI singles to cut it to one, and two batters later senior Ashleigh Phelps laced a clutch two-out single to left, scoring Funk with the tying run.
It remained 5-5 through seven, sending the game into extra innings. After returning to the circle to start the sixth, Conway mowed down two straight batters to strand the potential go-ahead run at third in the top of the eighth, enabling Babson to walk off with the victory in the home half when junior Christa Shorette lined a single off the third baseman's glove, scoring sophomore pinch-runner Meghan Hayes from third.
Senior Jackie Enos went 3-for-4 in the opener for the Beavers, while Funk, Phelps, and first-year Emily Morris each added two hits.
With Coast Guard now eliminated, Babson set its sights on top-seeded Springfield, whom the Beavers needed to beat twice in order to claim the league title. After the Pride took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, Funk drove in her third run of the afternoon with a single to center in the third, and Conway then led off the fourth with her second home run of the year as the Green and White took a 2-1 lead.
Although Springfield put at least one runner on each every inning except the first, Conway limited the Pride to just one unearned run until the bottom of the seventh. After the first two batters were retired, Kelly Blake doubled to right, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Christina Leader to tie the game at 2-2.
Heading to extra innings for the second straight game, the Beavers regained the lead in the top of the eighth when Phelps doubled in Funk with two outs. However, Springfield answered yet again, with Jenna Webb tying the contest with a double in the bottom of the frame. Conway then issued a walk before leaving with two on and nobody out, but Babson escaped the jam thanks to Rubega and a fantastic defensive play by Shorette. The veteran third baseman made a diving snag of a bunted pop-up just a few feet in front of the plate and then doubled off the runner at first for the first two outs of the inning. Rubega then induced an inning-ending fly out to Phelps in left, stranding the winning run at second.
That set the stage for a monster ninth inning for the Beavers, who scored four times to finally put away the contest out of reach. Morris drove in Rubega with the go-ahead run, and later in the frame Benoit added a two-out, bases-loaded double that scored all three runs to account for the 7-3 final.
Benoit finished with two hits and three RBIs in the win, while Phelps, Conway, and Lacy joined her with two hits apiece. In the circle, Conway allowed three runs - all of which were unearned - on eight hits, walked three and fanned seven in the no-decision. Rubega then came on and pitched two scoreless innings of relief, giving up no hits and two walks while striking out one. It was the junior righthander's fifth win in as many decisions this spring.
Playing their third game of the day and fifth of the weekend, the Beavers finally ran out of steam in the final contest of the tournament. Springfield scored two runs in each of the first, third, and fourth innings to build a 6-0 lead, and although Conway and Funk would record RBI-hits in the sixth and seventh frames, the Pride would hold on to win the game, 6-2, and take home the NEWMAC Championship.
Conway and junior Lindsey Schmid each finished with two hits, while Rubega started and took the loss, giving up three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings to fall to 5-1.
Regardless of whether the Beavers' hopes for an at-large bid are realized on Monday, Babson will play host to the NCAA Tournament New England Regional beginning with four games this Thursday. More details will be released following the announcement of the tournament field on Monday.
