College Coaches and lessons

Questions and Discussions Regarding the College Recruiting process

by softballfan33 » Sun Jul 28, 2013 12:13 am

Is there a rule regarding college coaches, asst coaches, Student assts, etc, giving lessons to a kid? DD2 has taken lessons from an asst coach at a local college since she was 9 and if he isn't available the head coach or one of the other assts takes the lesson. She has another year before entering high school, but we didn't know if we would have to find a new batting coach or not. Our local college is definitely on her list of possibles when the time comes if that makes a difference.

Is there anything we should be aware of? I plan to ask him as well, since we are coming up on that time frame, but thought I would ask you guys as well.

Thanks

College coaches cannot meet off-campus with potential recruits once kids begin high school. Since they can't even return phone calls or emails during high school, it would be difficult to even schedule lessons. As you may know, they can begin contacting you on Sept 1st, entering junior year of high school.

Now, if the lessons are held on the college campus, there's no limit to the number of times you travel to college campuses. And while on campus, the coaches may talk with you freely. So it may not be an issue if lessons are on-campus. Not sure if there are rules about the coach providing paid lessons to potential recruits, so that would be a question to ask.

NAIA coaches are allowed to make contact with high school students.

I'll be the first on this post: These rules are so stupid. The coaches get so stressed out trying to make sure they are following the ridiculous rules. Most rules, you can understand the purpose - these , nope.

The rules were all set up to try to keep an even recruiting field between big and small/rich and poor. Very little is set to protect the athlete. The ncaa is there to keep schools competive

The big schools have the big bucks to hire full time people to make sure that all the t's are dotted and the i's are crossed while the small school coaches waste tons of time, when they need the time to spend doing important things. And like you said, little is done to protect the athlete.

We do lessons at the cages there at the college not off campus. I guess then the only question would be setting them up (or cancelling/moving them in an emergency), if we can't contact each other.....

What type of college team is it - NCAA D1/D2/D3, NAIA or JuCo?

There must be some exceptions because NCAA D1 coaches can coach travel teams with some restrictions.
