I don't think ol' Geno is completely clean here.
They mentioned it numerous times during the LLWS that Mo'ne said she would be the starting point guard at UConn someday.

She likes baseball.
Yes you always hear that once boys reach puberty, they become stronger and girls can't keep up in baseball.
But her talent was something that we haven't seen before, where she looks like she does keep up and even dominates boys at this age level. Who's to say she can't play baseball?

On the other hand, she would probably make a great lefty slapper center fielder, reminds me of a young Alix Johnson, who just graduated from ASU.
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

Regardless, he has a problem. No way she can go there if he is still the coach. NCAA will also have act on the infraction.

UConn is arguing it was permissible because Mo'ne wasn't a prospective student-athlete (PSA) yet since she hadn't started classes for 9th grade. The problem with that defense is the NCAA bylaw on telephone calls says "individual" rather than PSA like most recruiting rules. It will be interesting to see how that is ruled since some college softball coaches are under the same understanding and calling girls before they become a PSA.

FWIW, my recollection is the announcers talked about how basketball was her favorite sport and she wanted to play PG for UConn.

She might be able to play frosh baseball because many boys haven't matured yet. However, it is a big jump from LL to HS baseball with 90' bases, pitching from 14-1/2'' further back and only -3 drop bats.
