College Recruiting

Do You Really Know Them(the Coach)?

Questions and Discussions Regarding the College Recruiting process

by jonriv » Mon Sep 28, 2015 9:51 am

Was talking to a friend at my daughter's alumni game this weekend. He had mentioned a number of his players that had issues with coaches once they went away to college. The one that really stood out was the Coach from the University of Rhode Island. This struck home, we had met with this coach on a number of occasions and my daughter was actively recruited by her. URI was my daughter's first college softball "camp" and also her first interview. URI was never high on her list, but its close proximity to a second home of ours made it an ideal place for a "test drive" If you are going to make mistakes in an interview or camp, might as well be low on the list. Coach Layton was great. Once hearing it was my daughters first interview, she took a lot of time explaining the process, what to expect, what kind of travel teams to play for etc... A year later my daughter got a call from the coach- they were interested, she went and saw her and had a good meeting- the coach invited my daughter to attend a Providence vs URI fall game. We went to the game(horrible softball) my daughter said to me during the game(based on the students around here) "I don't want to go here" After the game we thanked the coach and my daughter sent a thank-you note thanking the coach for her interest, but that my daughter was looking elsewhere- she got a nice note back from the coach. The following year I saw the coach at the CT Tradition Showcase(my DD had already committed) The coach asked about her, was happy she found a place. I thanked the coach for all her help. End of story. My friend this Saturday said look it up- so I did. Just goes to show.

Looks like the university officials changed their mind and did renew her contract. I wonder what she has over them that they can't get rid of her although it's obvious that they would like to.

A nightmare situation for all involved.

She was not renewed this past year, but despite these allegations and continual losing- she stayed in place for a long time. From what my friend told me, there were allegations far worse than what made the news and Sports Illistrated

Actually- something I did hear directly about this coach. A player from a nearby HS who had played on two TB teams with my daughter tried to walk-on at URI. Now I fully understand that walk-ons are a long shot, but this girl was good hitter , fielder and very fast. I thought she had a shot. Most walk-ons find out in a couple of weeks to a month if they made the team or not. This girl attended every practice, workout and fall game etc...... She was not told she was "cut" until the day she left for Thanksgiving break. My DD reminded me of that story. My DD recalled how pissed she was in the way her friend was treated

The right collegecoach is the difference between a rewarding college experience and a miserable diaster.
Watching games practices during the season and chatting with parents is one way to get an idea of what really goes on.
Another idea is to look at the number of incoming freshman each year and compare it to how many stay for thier entire career. Teams with lots of fresman but very few seniors is a warning sign of danger ahead.
