Standing out at Softball Camps????

Questions and Discussions Regarding the College Recruiting process

So when you get the message that your player -- "had a great camp but didn't really stand out"....
Player attended college camp -- had a great time. Hit line drives, no errors in fielding drills or games, hustled, giving high 5s to teammates, talked to coaches. Overall she DID have a great camp...

But if your child is an IF...makes the plays she is supposed to make, hits well, etc what makes a player stand out to the college coaches.

Great Defense....hits over .400 for season in summer and fall travel ball and school ball as well....great attitude....what are we missing

I would understand if someone hit a TON of HRs, or pitched in the 60s or had a great poptime as a catcher or ran to 1st in 2.7 or less....but there are so many great players that are IF or OF, make their plays, hit the ball, get on base and score runs...but thats what they are PLAYERS ---so how to they become STANDOUT PLAYERS?

Just my $.02 from my own experience. Some times its not if the player makes the plays or hits the ball, Its how they LOOK when they make the play or hit the ball. Do they have an athletic build? Do they have a smooth, fluid and athletic movement when they range toward a ground ball in the IF, or a fly ball in the OF? Do they have an inefficient throwing motion that could lead to injury concerns? Is their swing something the coach can work with?

From some of my observations and conversations, coaches are looking at what a player can become when they are 20 and not necessarily what kind of player they are as a sophomore or junior in high school. Just a brief example, my DD played with a pitcher who, by her numbers alone should have been a mid-major D1 prospect. The problem was that she was 5'2 and not athletically built. Last time a checked, she ended up attending a D3 on a partial academic. No disrespect intended toward her school or any D2, D3 etc. Its just that sometimes a player's options are limited by the body they were born with.

As far as "what is considered athletic ?".....its kind of like the Supreme Court definition of pornography. You will know it when you see it.

Tell her before going not to take it personally and neither should you. Coaches are people too.
They each have certain likes, dislikes , personalities etc. That " dream school " usually doesn't end up as planned.
Went to 1 camp 4 years ago , coach split kids into 2 groups . Pitchers , slappers in 1 group and then all the rest
Spent the entire camp only looking at the one group. Would pick up her bucket and move with the group.
Same year , camp with brand new coach. Wow, is all we could say. Gave the " don't call me , I'll call you speech " .
It's a fit both ways. No sense going there no matter how great the school if she doesn't feel that the coach is there
to help or is looking for what she may have to offer.
