Yes, whatever you do, don't keep stats. Having information about your players performance is a bad thing

I think he means as a coach don't feel the need to break out the stats to justify your reason to cut...Stats are always good...but sometimes stats just leads to another argument?

Exactly. And you dont want to argue, cutting is always difficult, make it short and constructive without destroying the kid.

The frustration will be magnified if the weak link is a friend's or coach's dd. In the animal kingdom what does the pack do to the weak link? Once you taste the blood of your first kill it is easier from then on out. Step up and make the tough decision. It will make you a better coach and a better team.

Setting the tone for your way of coaching is important early. When I started this team, 5 years ago, we had several pretty strong players and some lesser experienced players. We played a couple of tournaments, placing 2nd in 14u (we were 1st year 12u), and 4th or 5th in some good 12u tournaments. I invited one very strong kid to come join and along with her got 2 other very strong kids that came with her as a package deal. The parents had been 'aggressive' before and I just said ' the deal is no bs - understand?' First tournament, with the new group, we wiped out a team that had beaten us before. The second game, we were set against the top team in 12u in the state. Figuring that there would be some strong hitting, I moved 2 of these kids from infield to outfield, I needed my strongest kids where the action was sure to be. First pitch and a parent came howling out of the stand, 'my kid dont play no outfield! ' I asked the blue for time and called the two out of the out field to come in - I then told them with the parent standing beside me , they were off the team. The child started crying, the parent started pleading with me to stay, I said 'No - you had one chance - that was it.'

I also had two girls who from all appearences were excellent athletes, very good practice players, every 4 or 5 tournaments, they would have a good game, sometimes a good tournament. I tried everything over 3 years, extra individual practices, moving them all over trying to find a better spot. The only thing that improved is when they werent there. Over those 3 years, we did 'ok', we won some tournaments, but we always had our sure outs there in the lineup. I also always had these murmurs up in the stands from those sets of parents - nothing terrible but just little comments. After 3 years, I finally did what I should have - this is the biggie - the next 9 tournaments after that cut, we were in the championship game all 9 tournaments, we either took 1st and 2nd, not having to deal with a weak part of the lineup. So the bottom line is I screwed my team, my players, my coaches and my parents for 3 years until I finally did what I should have done 2.5 years before - my excuse ? is that I thought I could fix things that I was not able to.

Learn from my mistakes.

My suggestion - just cut - no stats, no nothing other than "This is not working out and I think it would better if you found another team - I suggest xxxxx or yyyy - you will get more playing time with them than you will with this team.' And thats it. If you cant do this, dont coach.

Make no mistake! No cowards here. I will do whatever is necessary to ensure the success of my team and program. My focus is on my top players , not the bottom of the roster. Not only am I cutting this one I am cutting another one for the same reason. Nutball parents that want to run their mouth instead of improve their daughters. Earn your time or leave. If you dont like the way we do things get out!. If you cant earn your playing time then you will get none. We will have a serious talk with the parents after spring try outs. I know I have several very talented girls coming to our team that are dedicated to softball and winning tournaments. No BS, no second chances!!! One blowup from mommy or daddy and your gone! Thanks for the input on the HB board. Always makes for some very good conversation.
Game on!

Wow you sure seem worked up about all this. Why don't you just have tryouts in the spring and if better players show up then the ones you are so worked up about won't make the roster. Heck you may even get lucky and the ones you don't want may just CUT YOU and move on to another team.

Only If he's lucky....

Only 3 reasons...parents cut coaches...

1. Dad thinks kid is the greatest but she isn't very good..
2. Mom thinks kid is the greatest but she isn't very good...
3. Mom and Dad think kid is the greatest but she isn't very good..

And parents cut coaches because the coach "isn't very good". It does happen you know.

Well, make no mistake...2 sides to every story..and most certainly coaches are not perfect..just curious though..??

Why would a parent cut a coach after the season is started only to say that a coach isn't very good..??

Once again, appears the reason the coach isn't any good is because the parents "star" DD didn't get to play because she sucks..

If parents did their homework, they would know about the coach and/or organization before they joined the team not after...!!!

Our team has won or placed in 10 out of its last 18 tournaments. Not bad for a coach that took a group a group of girls out of rec and started from scratch. As our team contunues to grow and new talent continues to show up at our try outs we are facing some new issues. Thats why I threw it out to HB. Do you coach? Ever coach? Did your DD get cut? Want to scrimmage?

I did not say you were a bad coach. I don't even know who you are, but if you are seeking coaching advice from HB then I do question your judgement. Not to mention the fact that you get on here and bad mouth little girls and their parents.

Can you say daddy ball? ;) If your team won or placed 10 out of 18 tournaments, why change? Not to mention they are straightout of Rec.
Why seek the change when you are at the end of the fall season. Teams typically hold spring tryouts and as someone eluded to earlier you would take the best. Problem solved!

What's your team name and what area do you all play out of? There are several teams I would like to see you face.

Well,
It’s been an interesting discussion. Lots of passion and lots of opinions on all sides. I did not post this topic to find out what to do. I have coached and competed at a pretty high level for a number of years. I posted this topic because I have found myself having this same conversation and related conversations with several coaches in our area over the last month or so. I could tell the coaches were really grinding over these issues. I always choose my words carefully and tried to fully understand the coach’s issues and concerns before dulling out information or suggestions. Some of them are new, some are just getting to the point that they are attracting new players, some are experiencing parent challenges for the first time, most of them are HB observers and all of them are good people trying to do the right thing. Coaching is challenging and goes into issues that stretch way beyond the playing field.
It’s a tuff balance between playing and developing all players while at the same time putting your team in the best position to win. Some say cut the player, some say cut the coach. Some say keep the player, some say send her packing. Some say be loyal to your existing players, some say always look to improve. Select Softball is very competitive and evokes allot of passion in people. Winning is important and different teams are built for different purposes. Select Softball is not for the faint of heart and you will need to have success if you are going to keep your better players and compete on a regular basis. Especially if you’re not a big name organization. Only the strong survive in the long run.
Just keep in mind that softball is and always has been "a game", "played by kids" and 'loved by many". See you at the park!!!!
