High School Daughter loses interest due to HS Program

by Skarp » Wed Jan 13, 2010 2:58 pm

I am blissfully ignorant of the politics and inner workings of dd's high school softball program. God grant me the strength to stay that way...

If memory serves, there was a "what to wear to high school games" thread in the early days of the bucket that was pretty entertaining.

Just an idea - on a serious note, which I have a problem being lately, but our h/s usually had made what I thought were not shirts I would wear, they were the t-shirts, about the level below what are given away at tournaments. So I made up the school logo, sent it in to www.queensboro.com, and had some decent polos made up. This was 3 head coaches back - I offered to let the coach at that time sell them to the parents and make the team some bucks but she wasnt interested so I just bought the order (4) for me and been wearing them ever since to the h/s games.

In HS ball you are really lucky to get a real coach. You know it's a shame look at all the time these coaches get to spend with our kids.If our travel coaches could have the same amount of time these coaches have you could get some quality work done.

We are pretty excited down here - new coach, new look. And as those of us who have spent a few innings on the field know, will take a while to get things rolling as she gets her program going. She is young, around 24-25 but has played since she was 4, so what she will do comes from very recent experience. Best thing of all, she spent her first weekend after taking the job, attending a coaching seminar given by some big names, Candrea being one of them. A great start - imo. She will do things different, no doubt, but this is the time where everyone has to get behind her, starting with me.

I was just recently told by a HS coach that the state has decided to no longer make PE and Health a requirement in Texas. They apparently are leaving it up to each district to determine if they want to continue having these classes in our schools.
Basically from what I was told, if a PE or Health teacher wants to stay at a school, they have to get certified to teach another course. Of course if there are no openings for that course, they will have to find a new school to work at.
As most of you know, there are a lot of coaches in our schools that only teach PE and/or health. Leaving those coaches to find another place to work. I know this will effect DD's school and softball coach if our district goes along with this, which sucks because she is a new coach and knows what she's doing.
I have tried finding a link online but can't seem to find anything about it.
My daughter is perfect, she knows everything. Just ask her.

When he floats out to the third base box between innings, his long beard and white robs flowing in the wind, I swear (not literally) that I can hear angels singing as he gives our girls signals. Seriously, it is almost as if he instinctively knows what lurks in the hearts and minds of opposing coaches' and players' when he calls for a surprise bunt or calls a change up.

He, however, recently started leaving cryptic suggestions during their morning meetings that they should focus only on high school ball and should abandon their travel ball teams. I and other parents are resisting. One parent is even trying to get him fired. Hopefully, we are doing the right thing.

That's definitely a bonus when the coach is wanting to learn from the college coaches. Our HS coach goes to a couple seminars and models a workout program after A&M. It shows on the field. Obviously select ball was the key to recruiting but I have no doubt in my mind that the time spent in HS ball was positive. Unfortunately, that is the exception to the rule. And hopefully, our other two will have the same opportunity and if not, I'll have to re-create it myself. (results of that could be sketchy)
