What a freak accident.
I have decades of experience at 1st base and my DD played there at least 10 years and I can't imagine this happening.
Am I reading this right? An arrant throw took the fielder into the path of the runner?
I know that you hear it from me a lot, but people need to learn how to throw. An experienced 1st baseman, does not stick their left arm out across the running lane to haul in those throws, generally because you can get your shoulder dislocated.
I have never thought that you could get killed.
Also, if you are picking up a bunt on the line, as the runner is approaching I would just hold the ball in both hands and allow myself to be sat down on my rear.
I am just amazed that someone died after a collision at 1st base.
