ASA Rule Question...Playing Up

What's on your mind?

by SBGeneral » Fri May 09, 2008 11:48 am

Can a registered ASA player, play as a pick-up player, up one age group then come back down to her age group & play in the same season?

Exampel:
player is a registered 14u player. 16u team needs a pick-up player. Would she still leagel for 14u National play in the same season?

if so, is there a limit to how many times this can happen or a certin date it has to stop?

If I am not mistaken, you can play up as long as it is not a qualifier of any sort. Once she is signed to that age division, she is tied there.

I think there may be an accpetion to 18G, I vaguely remember that from somewhere.

You can play at whatever level you wish as long as you don't sign two ASA Championship Rosters. You cannot compete at two different ages of ASA Championship Play in the same season.

This was posted on one of our local boards

If your team plays in any ASA Qualifier, and the first are this weekend in Cherokee (12A, 14A, 18A) and Columbus (16A), and your daughter's name is on the roster when the team checks in and is redlined, your daughter cannot play in any lower age group, on any age B team, or with any other ASA championship roster in 2008, unless added only in the week prior to Nationals as a pickup player.

READ MY LIPS!! THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!! This is the last chance to decide if you have made the right choice, the right team, the right age, or the right level. You have been with a team for months now; LAST CHANCE!! You are frozen to that roster until 2008 Championship season is over as far as ASA is concerned.

That includes being a pickup player. It doesn't matter what team you think she is on; if she is on THAT roster that is redlined at any Qualifier, she is frozen to that team, and is ineligible to play ASA with any other team.

Any Tournament on the link below, or a National Qualifier in any state, and your daughter is frozen to that team.

It really does not matter what age the child is, it is all based on the age group of the team she is actually rostered on that determines what age groups she can pick-up with. Then it determines what age group TOURNAMENT she can play in and has nothing to do with the age of the team she picks up with.

She can play in ANY Tournament that her registered team would be eligible to play in or UP in age groups as often as she wants, as long as it is not a Qualifier it will not effect her; however she cannot ever play DOWN an age group from the age group of her team that she is rostered on, even if she is young enough age wise. It all goes by the ROSTER she is on and the age group of the tournament she is playing in. She could even pick-up with a younger team or "B" team as long as the tournament she was picking up for was the same as her rostered teams clissification or one they would be eligible to play in.

She also cannot pickup with a team that is playing in the same tournament as her rostered team. (I know that one sounds wierd, but it is a rule that does come up occaisionally)

Example 1: a 13 year old kid rostered on a 16U "A" roster can pick up with ANY AGED TEAM for a 16U or 18U Tournament, but cannot pick up for a 14U tournament.

Example 2: A 15 year old is rostered on an 18U GOLD team; she can pick up to play in any 18U "OPEN" or "GOLD" tournament, no matter what age the pick-up team playing in the tournament, but cannot pick-up with that team to play in a 16U tournament or 18A tournament...
