Dead ball on interference???

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by SnocatzDad » Thu Jun 24, 2010 6:44 am

Didn't complain about this, because it went my way this weekend.

ASA Rules (Regional Qualifier 2 umps)

R1 on 2nd, batter hits towards F6, R1 interferes with F6 (and is ruled out by umpire) F6 still manages to throw out batter/runner at 1st so we get double play.

On the interference, should that have been a dead ball, R1 out, Batter/runner awarded 1st base? No ruling was made that interference was trying to break up double play since R1 was not forced forward.

Interference is an immediate dead ball, no other action can occure after the fact. Unless the umpire ruled that the runner was intentionally trying to break up a double play, the runner that interfered is out, batter/runner is awarded 1st base.

Regional and no one protested? The other ump didn't say anything? The only thing that can allow 2 outs on interference is in the judgment of the umpire did it break up a double play.

BTW what age group and Level A, B or C

That is true in this call, but not always.

ASA regional qualifer 16UA, Sioux Falls SD. Same game Base Umpire tried to award first base on an illegal pitch and I had to have them confirm with UIC that it was choice of result of the play or a ball on the batter, not result of the play or first base award. UIC got it right, umps were gracious about the mistake call was corrected and we moved on. That's how it should be. No tirades, no drama just get it right.
