wade, if a coach tells you the 1st baseman pulled her foot, will you talk to your partner about it if you think you didnt pay enough attention to the foot?

No of course not.

I will talk to my partner because sometimes the Plate Umpire has a better angle to see a pulled foot.

 I'll never, ever Blue. Not enough $$$ or DDGM's in the world. Blues (real ones) are a special breed and I don't have the stuff for it. Besides, as a blue I don't think you can carry "stand clearing" weapons.

8-) <You'll have to settle for run ruling every Texas team you face at Nationals as your piddley reward.>

I'd gladly take that piddley!

Just my 2 cents on a couple things....

One, my boy plays U10 travel soccer (I know, commie kickball....he's a heck of a little baseball player too), and they frequently have young teens as refs....and more often than not, it gets ugly, I think because a 12 year old just doesn't normally have the confidence and feeling of authority to call fouls on 10 year olds. We had a big tournament this weekend, and I was a "volunteer" field marshall, and one of the coaches of a U10 girls game was extremely upset after his team lost (naturally) because they "paid good money" to be there and their ref was a kid only a couple years older than his team, and they "got ripped off" because the ref either didn't know the rules or didn't enforce them. Having seen similar situations very often in soccer, I couldn't really argue with him, I just sent him to the organizer's tent to let them handle him :)

Two, this post has resurfaced a couple attitudes imho.

Three, be glad you aren't in Little League where the umpires are the coaches of the other teams (the 6 pm home coaches ump the 8 pm game and vice versa). We had 2 idiots last night, who don't know a thing about softball (I feel sorry for their poor little team, they get blasted continually), and they blew several calls, including letting the other coach make a (incorrect, imho ) call for them in the last inning in what ended up a one run game.
Proud fastpitch, baseball, volleyball, soccer, basketball, etc. Dad :)

Is there an age requirement to umpire? My DD says she would like to try it in our local league?

The only requirement is 25/50 vision.

I believe many umpires are cross-eyed....which would explain the moving strike zones and the NCAA umpires giving a full 8" off the outside and inside corners routinely....it looks right down the middle to them...
