Extra batters

Rule question? Get it answered here.

My DD was in a tournament this weekend, sanctioned by ASA. The tournament required the coach to bat every player up to 12 then they were allowed to sub in. My DD's team only had 10 this weekend, so they batted all 10. One of the players on her team was struck in the knee with a batted ball while running (whole other rule question) and could no longer play. My DD's coach was then told every time that the player came up in the batting order it was an out for the rest of the game. Now I am under the understanding that ASA doesn't have a definative rule on this, but the home plate ump said out for the first at bat, outfield ump said every at bat, the tournament director said out every time. Does that seem normal or am I off on this?

When you create a bastard rule (batting more than regulation), the end result of a nonstandard situation is also a bastard.

In my mind, there would be no out unless you dropped below 9 batting to 8, which is the original application. But, you aren't playing ASA rules; you are playing modified (bastard) rules. So, you get whatever the person in charge decides, not an ASA rule.

Bastard rule? I think that term was used a lot by the parents lol. No one knew what to do, the tourny director even suggested asking the other coach what he wanted. I just don't see how any one can say you have to bat 10 then penalize you for an injury that drops you to 9.
The play that the player got injured was another debate, the short stop(only person with a play on the ball) missed the ball and it hit the runner behind her as it headed for the gap in left center. Umps called the runner out on contact. The coaches asked why she was out when the runner was BEHIND the short stop who missed an opportunity at the ball. They were told if she is off the base she's out unless the ball ricochets off of the defender's glove.

I can understand the umpires ruling since the Shorthanded Rule states that when a player who has left is due to bat and there is no substitute, an out will be recorded each time that player is due to bat (4.1.D.2.e)

I get the rule, but how do you penalize a team that was forced to bat 10?

Call an out?

Bastard rules beget bastard results. It should have been spelled out in the tournament rules.

It is if you start with 10.

Shorthanded applies anytime you have fewer players in the batting order than you started.

But like it has been noted, special rules require special remedies.

This one was either a 'opps' or 'duh' moment if it happens as you've typed it here.

ASA
Rule 8-7-K
When a runner is struck with a fair untouched batted ball while not in contact with a base and before it passes another infielder excluding the pitcher, or if it passes an infielder and another fielder has an opportunity to make an out.
EFFECT: The ball is dead and the runner is out. All other runners must return to the last base legally touched at the time of the interference.

So question then, was there another fielder behind the 1st one that could have made a out if the ball was not interfered with? If no, then see my 1st sentence. :D

no chance anyone behind short could have gotten it, left center was a huge gap and the ball was hit between short and second base. By rule she should not have been out, but the ump said that she was out because the short stop never touched the ball.

And I get the rule for shorthanded, my question is who makes a team bat 10 then penalizes them due to injury. The coach did not want to bat 10.
