Anderson Heat 12U - Colorado Qualifier May 17-18

I come from a state where CA teams regularly come and take a berth. Washington. The better teams around here very much like the oppurtunity to play some of the better teams from CA. In fact, several teams from here pay to travel to CA to get a chance to play teams.

Like it or not, the 'at-large' berths are designed to allow teams to travel and get those berths. An 'at-large' berth is not that regions berth, it is an 'at-large' berths given to the region to hold the tournament.

People in other parts of the country get a chance to see how great fastpitch can be... and they do not have to pay to travel to CA. It comes to them.

I agree with some of Sam's points on ASA pricing itself out of markets over time. A large part of the ASA system is designed around men's fastpitch and slowpitch. They could probably do better if they would think in terms of JO.

Also, it is a bit of a shame that you have so many competitive teams from CA yet relatively few get berths. Then they end up with less than competitive teams from the region 'filling' out a tournament.

For us living here, the 'at-large' system works. It is nice to have good competitive teams come to town and play us tough.

I think its pretty cowardly to go out of state and take a berth away from the only chance these Colorado teams have to qualify for nationals. Hey If you can't comptete in your own state and qualify then you don't deserve to go. I could see why California has a bad reputation from other staes when it comes to softball. Prey on the weak to fullfill your goals I guess......good luck Anderson Heat for finding the easy way out.

SBjunky I have to tell you something you are no where near the truth on this one. First off it is open for any team to play in. ASA makes up the rules not Anderson Heat. What are you talking about California having a bad reputation? The only reputation I know is that every year they have many of the best teams in the country at all levels. Besides ASA nationals I think that the next challenging tourney in the country is ASA So Cal State. Not that Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma and a few more have just as good teams but they don't have as many good teams.

There are a lot of great teams at state and first through third can be won by 20 different teams. No pool play and a straight double elimination makes it a little tough. You can be one of the favorites to win state, get a bad draw and play bad one game and you are done.

I think it was very smart for AH to go try to get their berth in Colorado. I heard that they were the first team to sign up in February. Besides that I bet there are 50 other 12U So Cal teams that are happy as he!! that AH might not be playing at state.

Rumor is AH played 2 games today in Colorado 12-0 and 9-0

Spazmom, congratulations, you finally posted something that makes sense and doesn't put down another team.
For someone who claims to be "new to 12u travel ball", as you constantly remind us, you seem to have a pretty biased, bitter mindset.
And all behind the cover of an anonimous screen name, hooray for you...
I brought home some Rocky Mountain Oysters from Colorado just for you.
I heard they taste kind of like chicken nuggets, maybe a little saltier.

To softballjunky, who said it is cowardly to go out of state to qualify for nationals, well, sorry you feel that way.
All I can do is tell you why we went to Colorado.
We were in this region 13 qualifier last year, in Tucson, AZ.
It isn't just for that region's teams, it is an OPEN qualifier, for any ASA registered team.
Last year, in AZ, there were 24 teams, and about half were from socal.
TNL, us, wildcats, renegades, ladyhawks, aa's, socal stars, bombers, and some more that i can't remember. San Diego renegades won their 2007 12u ASA berth at this tournament.

In February of this year, we contacted the AZ ASA commish, and he told us they were holding the qualifier in Colorado this year. We signed up in February and this is how it ended up, us and 3 Colorado teams.
We had a blast, the weather was beautiful, in the 80's , and we met alot of nice people.
Our team goal is to go to ASA nationals. This was one of many options for us to get there.
If you have ever been to the socal ASA state tournament, you would know what a crapshoot it is, Many will enter, 3 will get berths.
We went to Colorado and got our berth this weekend.

So now we can save some money for Alabama, which is our team's goal.
I am good with our decision, and it also opens up another berth for a socal 12u team.

Just got home from Colorado this morning, and I realized I never thanked all the posters for their kind words.
So, thanks to you all for sending the positive energy our way!
Thanks also to Colorado ASA and Colorado Cardinals for hosting the tournament.
Apparently, last week in Boulder, it was freezing, with rain and sleet.
Well not this past weekend. Saturday was mid 70's, and Sunday was low 80's, with a nice breeze. Just beautiful softball weather.
Friday night our team went to the Rockies/Twins game, and it was t-shirt weather.
The 3 Colorado teams we played were very classy, and you can tell Colorado is coming around with girls softball.
