Which 14u teams are returning and predicted to do well!!

by watchtonsofsoftball » Fri Aug 20, 2010 9:48 am

A friend of mine called me and is looking for a 14u team in the norcal area. His daughter is pretty good ballplayer and 96 Bday. They would like to find a team that is potential national caliber for next summer. Any ideas? Most of the teams I was watching this year have moved up. How will the Sorcerers look with players moving on and new coaching? Breeze 96 will be the team but they dont seem to add many players and have a good core. Im just thinking out loud here. Roseville Heat I just saw is returning but I am mixed on that team doing much. LM 14s are young and taking 97s so no 96 bdays on that 14u roster. AASA, Lady Magic,Stompers,Sting , Sorcerers, TNT, Synergy, Stompers, all moved up that had any sort of factor in NorCal this past summer. Give me the low down!

If you look at most teams over all, many of them are aging up and retaining the same coaching staff. Don't rule out a young 14u team as there are quite a few that were VERY successful 12u's. Lady Magic 12u is going up to 14u and have a solid team. They are deep in pitchers with a solid #1. Would like to see them add one more dominate pitcher, as they will return to Nationals. Sorcerers 12u had too many revolving door players, but always seem to be a tough team. Stomperz and TNT, well.... Sting always seems to have a strong team. Grapettes 14u-Reid has moved up 16u and onto new organization OBS Monarchs. OBS has 12u, 14u, 16u, & 18u teams, which I believe Reid will be the HC for 16u. Other ages, do your research and find out the success or failures of the coaches and their qualifications for coaches. Grapettes 14u-Lopez, new coach with what seems to be a new team with new players, as many previous have moved on to other teams. AASA 14u- Heinz moved up to 16u. This team is already qualified for 16u Nationals next summer. AASA 14u-Mello (previous 12u) is a defensively strong team with solid bats. Hopefully they can snag a dominate pitcher and play some ball!!
One thing I personally look for in a team / organization is the coaching staff, their ability to teach fundamentals, motivate the players, and remember it's just a game. I would rather play for a no-name team / organization with a TRUE coach, than a big name team / organization with "daddy ball" coaches who fail to coach and teach.
As for current tryouts, many teams have solidified their fall rosters and may be willing to take a look a dominate impact player. If any team interests your friend, best thing to do is go to a tryout and watch how it is ran and what the coaches looks for. That will tell you a lot.
Good Luck!

Just wanted to clarify a few things.

OBS Monarchs 14u team head coach is Rigo Galvin, Anthony Perez is asst coach.
That team has 3 solid pitchers and the catcher from 14u Grapettes CR team has stayed down to play on this team.

Rigo has been coaching for 10 years or so, starting with his older daughters who are done. He coached with me at Oakdale HS (number 1 in state for 2 years 3 straight league titles, back to back section titles) as well as my 16u Grapette team 4 years ago.He is a great guy that is no BS. He will coach this team exactly like I want it done, which was the entire reason for starting a new organization. Teams that all work together to build from the bottom up.
I will be involved with them at the beginning and heavily in the Spring prior to the older teams starting up.

I believe that have 10 confirmed players, maybe 11. There are no more planned tryouts but I know they are looking to add a middle infielder/impact player. Could be a place to start.

Waiting to see who is tops???? Good luck with your search, it is a never ending search if that is what they are waiting for.

By the way, we have a pitcher coming from 2hrs 45 mins away, so they must have liked what they saw:)

email Coreyreid@sbcglobal.net if you want more info on Monarchs 14u.

See my post, Lady magic 14s are solid and recommended them but when they inquired they were told they are only taking 97 bdays and no 96s. Their 96 team moved to 16s, so no place to go if you are a 96 bday wanting to play 14s in the LM organization. Not to mention, through the grapevine LM 14s are holding 16 players for fall. That's just crazy at the 14u level, especially for fall ball when its time to develop and get some actual field time. I got to see that team quite a bit and while they are good, they have some issues hitting against the better 14 teams, so they will still go through growin pains their first year IMO. Corey , my bad on not listing your team, you guys played some ball this past season. I'll pass the info. As far as tryouts most teams have room right now and are looking to fill their roster this weekend i have noticed. Not to many people arent still looking at the 14u division besides Breeze and LM. Oh and while im on LM , is it really necessary for their 16 team to hold 4 , 3 hour tryouts? Im thinking Bustos isn't walking through that door anytime soon, so just pick up some players and run with 'em.

so was the Haze team you speak of in 12 or 14 last year??
well I clicked the link and see they are playing 16, so I guess they were 14u. I did not see that team at all over the Summer, how did they do last Summer?

Yes we were a 14s team, a young one at that. we had a very good summer with 3 1sts, 2 2nds, a 3rd, in Fresno we went home early with a Sunday loss 2-1 with the Fresno Wild but played a strong Saturday...came a few times to Stockton, If I remember your 14 team was not there??? but lost both Sundays in the 2nd game with 3-2 to the Force and a 2-1 to the Visalia Elite..As with a lot of teams in this age bracket the High School Coaches who coach travel teams are aligning themselves with the incoming high school girls and in the North Bay our pool is not like the Valley...and the girls go with their coaches...even have some if you dont play with this team you may not make the high school team going on....but we are a dedicated program with great coaching (no I am not a coach) and the girls play well together...Maybe Corey we can put a friendly together this fall with you new program?? good luck this fall ...

Maybe I should have played the HS card to pressure kids into playing Monarchs.............. Nah, I love my girls too much to pull some crap like that. They play where they want as it should be.

We are probably going to do something this Fall. Already had a few teams express interest, so I will keep in touch.

God luck

I dont know..... we are pretty drama free.

I love my parents, they are great.

I tell them all when they join our team; I had to make a decision 2years ago. Pay no attention to parent input, or stop coaching. Well, I am still coaching.......

the 2nd thing is I coach because I love it and enjoy being there. If someone makes me not enjoy being there, one of us is going bye bye, and it wont be me:)

After that, life is pretty good.

One of my favorites from a long time coach, " Dont start a mutiny, just jump ship and we will keep on sailing without you."
