What's on your mind?

Sounds to me like you should have: Dead Ball & runner out on the Interference call...

Well, I'm man enough to admit when I don't know a rule, but someone else said after the game that the runner should have been awared 2 bases because the ball was out of play. I would assume that it would make a difference whether the batter was in the batter's box or not, and possibly whether it was strike 3 or not, but I'm just an ignorant hillbilly. It was ASA, if that matters.

BTW Wade, you have such a way with words, did anyone ever tell you that? I can only imagine how you talk to 12 year olds on the field

Sounds like no interference to me since the OP didn't mention any intent by the batter to interfere with the catcher's throw...its a train wreck.

Nope, it appeared that she was just heading back to the dugout after striking out, she just happened to move her head right into the catcher's arm path at the wrong time.

After the game an ump (not sure if it was one of the game umps or not) said that the runner should have been awared 2 bases.

Cannonball

So when the 2nd baseman OR SS is thrown the ball by the pitcher, what do they do if the B/R is NOT in front of them in the BASE LINE? Suppose the B/R is 'walking' to 1st & then 2nd (she did get 'walked') & when the ball is thrown to either 2nd or SS, the B/R slows or stops?

Ponder this F2 throws back to F1, if they try to take second have F1 run at BR to keep her at 1st, if BR on 3rd takes off F1 throws to F2 bang/bang.

You guys keep running plays like that, and we'll keep running circles around you. :D
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

WOW... well we tried running the play last night at practice where F1 throws to F4 to tag the runner and everytime the runner at 3rd scored, not only scored but it wasn't even a close play.

Question: How far towards 1B should F4 move to?

BTW we are a 1st year 12U with average to below average throwing strength.

That would be the issue. I see teams often working on very complex plays, when they would get more working fundamental drills.

How big of a lead was the runner on 3rd taking? If the runner on 3rd is taking a large lead, just have the pitcher take that out. If you are letting her have a large lead, it is going to be hard to get the out at one and at home.

F4 should shade towards first as far as she can, without letting the runner get past her. When the pitcher makes a decision to throw to F4, it will take a while for the ball to get there. So F4 has to have some distance. If there is to much distance, it will take forever for F4 to make the tag. It should be as close to bang throw, bang catch, bang tag, bang throw home as you can get it.

This play takes a while to get it down in practice, and even longer to get it in a game.

Are you just goofing around or are you serious?

Usually you are pretty good at rules..

The word "intent" is not in the rule. Its no where to be found in the rule. Nor is this a "train wreck". The key to this are words that actually are in the rule, namely "actively" hindering the catcher.

Backing out of the box, hindering the catcher throw could very well be considered "actively" hindering. If they are stepping out of the box at the time of the INT, "actively" is not even required. That mere act is enough.
