DFW 12U pitching

by rodehardputawaywet » Mon Dec 13, 2010 12:47 pm

Can you be more specific?

Pitchers seem to switch teams for the following reasons:
*More pitching time
*To become the #1 pitcher
*To find a better team
*To go to an organization that can help her develop or increase college scholarship opportunities down the road
*Parents are nuts

What about name calling, spitting, cussing...? Expanding your parameters allows for a more thorough and thoughtful discussion.

Why is it difficult to retain 12U pitching in DFW? What can younger teams learn from older teams/coaches in hopes of putting a better product on the field? Please note that I am looking for constructive criticism and or discussion.

There are many reasons pitchers leave teams - just like any other position. But, from what I've seen, these are some of the problems as to why good pitching is hard to find/keep at that age.

At the 12u level, there are a lot of pitchers who just could not make the transition from 10U at 35' and the smaller ball, to 12U at 40' and the larger ball. One example - Some girls develop way ahead of the others, and can literally out-muscle the smaller ones at 10U. Then at 12U, those girls are still pitching, but they just are not the "ace" they were before. Some get frustrated and quit, and some feel the need to go to other teams to try and get more pitching time.

At 12U, some girls have just decided to really start pitching. Some do very well right away, but others don't. Some parents want to switch teams because the team they are on now doesn't think of them as a #1 or #2 pitcher, and they feel pitching more will help. Sometimes the girl ends up being a good pitcher, and sometimes they don't.

Also at 12U, some girls are improving more quickly than others. It seems to me, there has to be some moving around as the players try to get with other players of the same ability and who have the same goals down the road.

I agree with what Vess Express has said about 12u pitching.

I would add a couple more items to that list.

1) Parents get in too big a hurry - these are just kids. they need time to develope. Let them pitch in prastice games until they develope. Let them go thru their growth cycle like the 2nd year 12's have gone thru. Then take a strong look at them 1/2 way thru their 2nd year 12 and see where they are. You might be surprized.

2) You can't expect a first year 12 to pitch like a 2nd year 12. They usually are not as big or as strong, physically an most important mentally. Pitchers have to be mentally strong to pitch.

Parents coaches give them time to develope.

Absolutely. I don't think a lot of people get that. From 10-13, there could be a huge amount of difference in the developement of a player, both physically and mentally. Just one year is often very hard to overcome.
