Adidas Futures Tournament/Tryouts

How can you pick a team with the weather conditions and so many kids especially with no type of hitting. In the live games the coaches where cutting up and not paying attention whats so ever. They did not take many notes from what I noticed. But it was a good work out and I respect all the kids for doing there best in the cold windy weather. Only time will tell how all this shakes out, and there is one more tryout to go still. I hope it is more organized.

That is because while they were trying out your daughter for the Adidas Futures team they also thought it a good idea to try out kids from their previous organizations for their newly formed competing brand Mizuno Impulse teams - despite Jason Gwyn coming on here saying that the teams were full and this was a tryout for Adidas only. It's my understanding this was not the case!

Interesting that it was not well organized, a sign of the new organization as well?

It will be something to see who they put together as their "elite powerhouse" team. Was anyone else there that noticed right after the tryout there were girls being fitted for uniforms? Why would that happen right after the tryout? How does that work? What does that tell you?!?!?!

It just looked like a team was getting new uniforms next year and several players on that team were at the tryouts, so the team mom was getting their sizes. I didn't think anything about it.

As for the tryouts, I think the cold weather made everyone look a little sluggish. It will be interesting to see who makes the team when it is announced in a week.

That's not what was happening if you have been keeping up, the teams besides futures were there, The former American Freedom McClasky and the former Fusion. They were getting fitted and they were told that they didn't know who was going to be on what team. They were told a lot of things, and are now seeing that they were "told" wrong. How do those coaches know who would go where from that tryout?!?! And once their Futures teams are picked, I bet they are their new teams as well. Let me clarify, the adidas Futures teams will be the new Mizuno Impuse teams. That is also strange, aren't adidas and Mizuno competitors?!?!?! How do you represent both?!?!?!

whoever said jason gwyn must be a great coach, go to one of his tryouts, go watch his team play and you will see more of that. its amazing that he was fired from twu for recruiting violations but he's able to coach the addidas team that is supposed to be about recruiting

This thread is a joke. None of you know Jason or how he operates so you are all speculating. I know for a fact that the mizuno impulse is full on BOTH 18 and 16s. Yes, he left Fusion but he never forced anyone to leave with him. Parents and athletes left on their own accord. There is obviously a group of people who feel that playing for Jason would benefit them. And another thing - check your facts, he resigned, he wasn't fired.

Gwyn did not get fired at TWU. He and former Texas Fusion Coach Marty Blower resigned following an investigation in to allege NCAA rules violations.

After the internal investigation, Dr. Richard Nicholas, TWU’s vice president for student life, said the rule breaking specifically involved a current student-athlete, not a recruit. By NCAA rule, the extra benefits are considered monetary, but that does not mean they involved cash, Nicholas said.

“It has nothing to do with eligibility; it has nothing to do with gaining an athletic advantage,” he said. “It has to do with the level of benefits that can be provided to an athlete, and they’re unrelated to athletic competition. The nature of the situation includes some confidentiality on the part of the student.”

It's fine with me if you want to trash me, I'm a big boy and I can take it. But at least do yourself and everyone else here a favor and get your facts straight. I am neither ashamed, nor embarrassed, about this situation and have been very open and honest about it with anyone that took the time to ask...I have nothing to hide.

As for adidas, I was very pleased with the turnout. I thought all of the athletes did a very good job, especially given the cold weather. The teams will be selected and notified in the next few days, and we will move on. There was around 85 athletes trying out on Sunday, with only 30 spots available. Simple math says that 55 athletes/parents will be upset and disappointed, that's just a fact and that's something I'm prepared to deal with. The evaluators did an excellent job of taking notes and left Courtney and I with plenty of information to help us make our decisions.

Until then...

My 2 cents - I was at the try-out. It was a miserable day, cold and windy. All the girls were trying their best. Cold hands affected throwing. A large amount of girls affected batting time. Could it have been run better, possibly. Trying to see 85+ girls in a few hours on a horrible day is impossible. There were a few girls I would say did well. Many may not have played up to their potential due to the weather. There were obviously several who would not be chosen. (Sorry, if you can't throw from 3rd to 1st, probably have to pass on you). My suggestion, take the ones obviously not quite there, eliminate them and have another try-out for the top 40 to 50. Get some batting reps, get running times and throwing speeds and distances. This will eliminate the players who are not quite "elite". Having the girls that played in college evaluating the players was nice, but I"m not quite sure a strong decision can be made on what was shown.

As far as girls trying on uniforms, it was for the Impulse girls and their new team who had shown up for the try-out. The teams are already in place and I know for a fact there are players on the teams that DID NOT come from Fusion or AF but from disbanded teams. It was nothing to do with Adidas only an opportunity to have some players already there for sizing.

Ouch, you boys play mean.

I think there are plenty of uncommitted, very talented girls around. There are some really great players that just have not had the exposure they need, or parents who don't know how to help them. I find the process very intimidating.

Just because the team is based in DFW doesn't mean there won't be girls from say, the Waco area that travel here to play. Texas is a big state!

If you base team selection solely on Sundays tryout, it would be hard to fill a team. I agree with another poster in that no one really stood out. I have to think that prior knowledge of players will be a factor. There were tons of bobbles, bad throws, and some really bad at-bats (only one solid shot that I remember).

Don't get me wrong- there was talent out there. I admire the kids for playing through the cold and making the most of it.

Things are becoming clearer. The Mizuno Impusle teams were already decided before this tryout even though people were told that they were not, that was proven by their choices. Now we will see if they are being truthful or not when it comes to the adidas Futures teams. The tryout was nothing more than a way for them to satisfy adidas Futures requirements in having a tryout. You can not decide on who is the best player by one or two hits and some catching of grounders and fly balls. There were no running times taken, no real hitting and no real catching. The girls performed, but not well. They worked through the cold. But as I stated before no big stand out player. A couple decent hits, with one of them being the most memorable.
