Texas High School Preseason Polls

by TRAVELBALLFAN » Fri Feb 18, 2011 3:04 pm

I think Celina and Royce City will drop in the next polls. They both let a 2A school from Grand Saline beat them. I think Grand Saline is ranked 4th in 2A.

I watched games at the FWC invitational this week..Birdville is decent, Wellburn is good pitcher. Should go far. Northwest is down due to pitching..2nd base is strong. FWC is real weak after the pitcher catcher duo. Wichita Falls Rider is average. Trinity is young and will have to mature fast. Aledo has potential, but will stuggle for a while yet. Irving has potential if the freshmen come through. They are starting 5 seniors and four freshmen. Grapevine and Richland will make some noise in their run but will fall silent.

Heard that Byron Nelson went to finals in Argyle and will be competitive in their first varsity year.

I have seen Wakeland and they are solid. I have seen Saginaw and they have a ways to go. I have seen Denton Guyer and they have potential to contend in District.

Byron Nelson HS maybe the sleeper in district 5-4A as I here they have a move in all-state pitcher from Alabama. Anyone see her play?

She has picked up on my team and she is pretty good. She is a great kid also. I heard Brewer beat them in the Championship game this weekend with her pitching. I didn't get to attend.

Class 4A

1. Elgin
2. Montgomery
3. Brenham
4. Port Lavaca Calhoun
5. Corpus Christi Moody
6. Frisco Wakeland
7. Royse City
8. Sherman
9. Dripping Springs
10. Little Cyprewss-Mauriceville
Also: Rockwall, Canyon Randall, New Braunfels Canyon, Forney, Wichita Falls Rider, Hallsville and Waco Midway
Comments: Montgomery won the Katy tournament and maybe I was not unfairly high on Brenham as Wade Wilson keeps coaching em up, the Cubettes have started 6-0 despite tremendous graduation losses. Bear in mind Montgomery and Brenham are district foes. Hannah Newcomb pitched a two hitter as Wakeland edged McKinney 3-2 on an opening day contest. Brittany Gehle and Tess Soefje collected two hits each for Wakeland. Wakeland then crushed Commerce 12-0. Sherman junior Katelyn Klug shutdown hard hitting 3A Princeton 10-2 with a two hit complete game. Waco Midway beat 5A Austin Bowie 4-2 as Katie Neal goes 7 innings with a four hitter. Ennis beat 3A West 4-1 and Hallsville beat 3A North Forney 12-2. Lampasas unloaded on Troy 25-6. Little Cypress Mauriceville beat Kountze 12-0 as Raven Cole had 11 strikeouts and allowed just one hit over seven innings. Offensively, Kassie James was 5-5, 3 runs; Demi Sheppard 3-5, 1 run; and Alexis Newton 2-5, 1 run. Elgin blanked 5A Belton 4-0 while Dripping Springs shutout Kerrville Tivy 6-0. Montgomery beat Katy Taylor 3-2 and Bellaire edged Magnolia 2-1. Elgin opened with a 7-4 loss to powerhouse 5A Keller then won three straight. For Elgin at Bryan, they lost to Keller 8-4; beat Austin High 7-4 as Abby Prinz hit her second homerun of the tournament then slammed Waco Midway 9-0, beat Huntington 5-0, beat Lovejoy 4-3 and beat Pflugerville Hendrickson 3-0 on a one hitter by Lauren Slatten. Brenham is 6-0 record after week one. Wichita Falls Rider lost to Burkburnett then went to the Ft. Worth Christian Tournament where they posted a 5-1 record. Over at the Forney ISD tournament Forney went 5-1 with two wins over FM Marcus and 2 or 3 run rules against lesser opponents with its one loss to Hebron. Forney has good defense and offense. Canyon Randall also went 5-1, with their only loss again to Hebron. North Forney went 4-2 with their only losses to Hebron and Canyon Randall.

Class 5A

1. Keller
2. Lewisville Hebron
3. Plano East
4. The Woodlands
5. Plano
6. Houston Bellaire
7. Pasadena Dobie
8. Katy Taylor
9. Alvin
10. Brazoswood
Also: Tomball, Pearland, Austin Anderson, Bryan and Austin Bowie.
Comments: Keller, Hebron, Plano East and The Woodlands all won opening weekend tournaments. In a season opening battle of the titans, Tomball played Pearland and shut out the Lady Oilers winning 4-0. Tomball’s MeMe Quinn fanned seven while scattering four hits for Tomball while Katie Doerre had a three run homerun. Keller beat Plano West 4-0 as Katie Ramsey pitched for Keller and only allowed 2 hits on the evening. Keller then edged 4A power Elgin 7-4. Alvin beat Tomball and Klein Collins defeated Katy. The Woodlands have beaten New Braunfels 13-3, Austin Westlake 9-0, Round Rock Westwood 10-0 in 3 innings and LaGrange 7-2. Tomball beats Round Rock 7-5 then loses to Dobie in extra innings. Bellaire beat Magnolia 2-1 in extra innings and Katy Taylor lost 3-2 to Montgomery. Over at the Bryan College Station high school tournament, Keller and Plano flexed their muscles making it to the championship game with Keller holding on in the last inning for a 3-1 win. Both teams took out some good opponents to the championship game. Plano overmatched Dobie and Bryan while Keller battled for an exciting last inning, come from behind over Bellaire. Van and Rusk showed well while Elgin won the consolation bracket with a 5-1 record. The Woodlands went to Austin Westlake and earned run rule victories over New Braunfels, Austin Westlake and Round Rock Westwood. Then they beat LaGrange 7-2 and run ruled Vista Ridge 10-0. Starting pitcher and LSU commit Paige McDuffee was 3-0 and freshman pitcher Caitlin Bartsch was 2-0 in her varsity debut, including throwing a no hitter against Vista Ridge on Saturday morning. In bray, Keller won against great competition beating Elgin 7-4, Clements 14-0, Brazoswood 2-1, Houston Bellaire 4-3, Rusk 8-4 and in the finals Plano 3-1. Lewisville Hebron was 6-0 in the Forney tournament as Heather Stearns on the mound was dominating, Plano East finished the first week of the season with a 6-0 record. They have beat their first 6 opponents by a combined score of 63-2 and won the Mansfield Tournament. Holly Kern has given up 2 runs over 5 games. Dobie is 5 and 2. They opened the year with a 5-4 win versus Kingwood on 2-14-11. Over the weekend they went 4 and 2 at the Bryan Tournament finishing in 6th place and defeated Tomball and Austin Bowie
