travel expenses

What's on your mind?

by softballmomma » Fri Jun 20, 2008 3:09 pm

OK Here is my question...... when a team travels to a National Tournament, whether it is ASA, USSSA or Triple Crown........ Who pays for the players traveling cost? Do the parents pay or does the team pay? And about how much does it cost per player? What is included in that cost?? Thanks

Depends on the Organization and Sponshorships. I have been with three organization and most pay for the National Fees and the players & parents pay their own way. Fund raising can help offset some of the additional fees.

For this year we budgeted for national fees and paying one coach who does not have a daughter playing.

Expense part I get, airfare, hotel, car, etc.....
We are a team that have been together for a year however just starting paying dues in March. We had sponsors that covered all of expenses up until then. We still have sponsors that cover our uniforms, bat bags and some tourney fee's. We are doing fundraisers to offset the cost of our traveling, the parents are being charged $ 1000.00 per player, this includes airfare (463.00), condo for 11 days, food and rental car... and they are complaining. Are coach is trying to have us raise enough money to give parents back all of there airfare money. So I wanted to let them know what the average team takes care of.

$1,000? God I wish! Look, it depends on where you live and where you are going. If you live in Socal and go to Panama City beach then the cost is going to be incredible. However, if you live in Texas and are going to Midland, then there is a difference obviously. 2 br condos for a week in panama city beach are about $1500 each for a good deal on the beach. Hotels in Midland I just looked up and apparently they are fully aware of who is coming because their prices are so frikkin high, a comfort suites room is $150 per night that week. That can't possibly be normal pricing for that area. If you fly, the cost increases of course. We're lucky here in Texas this year for the 14u age group I will fully admit that :D Now, our girls just have to play to their potential :!: Our team fundraises for Nationals and the cost that we bring in usually determines where we actually go to play, otherwise parents have to cough up the rest. Nature of the game 8-)
My daughter is perfect, she knows everything. Just ask her.

I agree, that sounds very reasonable for an 11 day trip!

What are the parents complaining about in particular, what were they promised? Am I missing something here, or is this the first out of state tournament and they didn't realize how expensive it can be?

Have them figure the costs separately and go from there...

The cost depends on where you are going. Our trip from CA to AL is about $300 each for airfare and rooms are a little over $100/night. Some families split a two bedroom if available. Add in rental cars for parents, players have a team van, plus food, and incidentals and you are easy over 2K

SD, where did you get the $ 300 air fair, my prices were a bit more ( then again I just started looking ) appreciate any imfo.

Softball momma....How does one sign up for your team????? Seriously...a FULLY sponsored team alone is awesome...heck, if a team gets sponsors for half of their "normal" expenses they should consider themselves lucky! You're asking this question with total expenses of less than $100 a day for a trip to Florida? Don't tell the Mouse about the deal you're getting! Grin, accept it, and gosh, if you have to do a little fund raising, DON'T COMPLAIN! Or at least not here on heybucket...you won't get a bit of sympathy.....

The teams we have always been on, there was a budget setup in the beginning of the season to cover tournies, uniforms, field expenses, etc. Then we paid a 30-50% within a couple weeks and the rest in a month or so. If there was additional traveling, we would have paid it.

Basically the teams finances went season to season. If there is left over money from sponsorships, I think the sponsorship money should go towards covering the players expenses. If there is money in the account at the end of the season, and I had to pay for DD to travel, that would not sit well with me. After all thats what sponsorship money is for isnt it?
