with two strikes if a slapper fouls off a pitch and doesnt finish her swing is she considered out for attempting to bunt? what would be considered a bunt attempt for a slapper? cant get a straight/consistent answer around here.

Of course it's a judgment call, but since you are calling it a swing in your post, I would say no. Not finishing a swing is not a bunt. Most batter's hands move forward from their body in an extending motion on a bunt attempt. The bat enters the hitting zone perpendicular to the plate. The hands (and the bat head) usually move into the hitting zone from back to front on slaps. This is what I generally use to distinguish a bunt from a swing.

Absolutely a judgment call; and many coaches will argue that because they wanted a slap, it had to be a swing, not a bunt. Sometimes it is very close, and you get the judgment you get.

It doesn't matter where the hands are; and it doesn't matter if there was a pushing motion at contact. Both of those are arguments used by coaches attempting to influence the decision in their favor.

We teach here that the main difference applies to the motion of the bat head; if the bat head travels farther than the hands prior to contact, it was a swing. If the bat head and hands have moved a like distance at the time of contact, it was a bunt. If the bat head and hands have moved a like distance at the time of contact, then there is a (fake) follow through, it was still a bunt, just one with a follow through.

One criteria that I use, and this is not an absolute, is that with a swing or slap, the bat is moving to the ball, with a bunt, the ball is moving to the bat.

As I said, not an absolute, 100% rule, but a good guideline to start with.

In NCAA play, by definition:

11.7.2.1 BUNT. A bunt is a legally batted ball not swung at but intentionally tapped with a bat.

11.7.3. SLAP. A slap hit is a batted ball that has been struck with a short chopping motion rather than with a full swing. A ball that is slapped foul is treated like any other foul ball and shall not result in a out unless caught in flight.

A new mechanic was added this year which allows the PU to go to a BU to get help if with two strikes on the batter she fouls off a pitch and there is doubt on the PU's part or questioned by a coach as to wether the batter's actions were a bunt attempt or a slap.

We had this exact situation recently.The player had 2 strikes and fouled 4 off and I kept arguing with the umpire about it.I talked to the uic and he said because they are moving they say it is not a bunt.I still disagree and think umpires will call it differently and plan on trying it soon just to see what happens.

Just because the batter is moving doesnt mean they arent trying to bunt. What do they think a drag bunt is?
