Who Does Not Have Hotel Rooms In Midland

What's on your mind?

by heybuckethead » Fri Jun 27, 2008 12:36 pm

This isn't about competition levels. The top 30 teams will be there.

It's about the fact that ASA is totally unresponsive to its core constituency, which are the bottom 100 teams that qualified for nationals and the 200-300 teams that tried to qualify and didn't, but intend to try again next year. If ASA keeps holding its national tournaments in God-forsaken locations, they eventually WILL lose their market and dominance as THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT to attend.

Many, many of the same complaints were made against Roseville last year (too far for the rest of the country, no flights, expensive, etc.) . . . and they only had 64 teams after doling out local berths, which is an embarrassment for ASA. Hopefully, if nothing else, Midland will be a wake up call for ASA.

I know of teams that have qualified but after checking out the cost and extreme inconvienence, they opted out. Disposable income is becoming harder to come by. Travel ball is getting to be out of site with gas prices. If they'd have it in an area that would somewhat serve as a 'pseudo' vacation spot, then people would want to go. What's wrong with serving 2 purposes? Are you saying that true competitive teams are only competitive if they're playing in some god forsaken area in the middle of hades?

ASA will learn this lesson soon as the economy weakens, people aren't going to foolishly throw their dollars away! You'll have to give them more bang for their buck instead of a Clark Griswald's Lampoon tournament.

Artomatic,

I agree. But, somehow, "Socal Franks" sounds like a dumpy bar in Redondo Beach. I guess it would really be "Socal Frank's" to be fully correct. Still sounds dumpy.

Since Socal is such an easy target, even with exceptional softball teams, what names would you least like that can be used by board members with glee in their heart? When launching our bland diatribes ridiculing the region for totally unwarranted reasons, are there specific terms of endearment that would offend you the most?

Just tryin' to help.

Enjoy !!

Here's another positive spin...

When we're all sipping our red and blue cups in the parking lot in OKC for Gold Nationals in a few years, we'll instantly have something else in common.

I can hear it now,
"Remember 14 Nats in Midland a couple of years ago? Man that place was..."

I wonder why all the levels of Nationals are NOT in OKC? or at least 12U through 18.
Why not stagger the weeks for each level and play them all at the Hall of Fame Stadium.

I'm am struggling to find any fault with your idea. It may make too much sense...

I am sure others won't agree. Some will say they like to play at new venues, however, if visiting the country is the point, play other tournaments. But at least OKC would have an established process, facilities, hotels, travel links, etc..

Excellent idea.

To help with finding a hotel in Midland/Odessa, you may want to use http://www.kayak.com. Select 3+ rooms and it will send you to a site that does large group bookings. No promises, but tonight, I logged on, selected Midland and 5 hotels claim they have rooms. It is better than calling every hotel. Sorry, Hilton was full, Paris heard Chap and I were going to be there with our red cups so she is joining us :D

I travel extensively, and I use http://www.kayak.com for all of my travel. Good luck.
