Agree. Tough forum to follow, but looks like item #13686 on their board on 07/28.

If I read correctly their version of story is similar to what happpened to the Las Vegas girls not being eligible for a CA team after ASA reversed a ruling?? Age issue not mentioned. They report issue as out of state pick-ups ruled ineligible at last minute. (IF I am following this board correctly.)

I heard the blues became suspious when one of them said they needed to hury because her daughters 10U game was about to start. Or maybe it was her shift was about to start at hooters. Or the liquor store was about to close?

On July 17th, the Mobile Thrillers 95 team was offered a bid to the ASA A Nationals Tournament to be held in Montgomery starting July 27th. Before accepting the invitation to play, the Thrillers coaches talked to Alabama ASA State Commissioner Al Murray to verify the eligibility of two pick-up players from Mississippi, who had played in the ASA Finals in that state. Commissioner Murray informed the coaches that the two girls were definitely eligible to play, and the Thrillers happily accepted the bid to participate. On July 26th, just hours before the Thrillers were scheduled to depart for Montgomery, Mr. Murray called and stated that he had made a mistake and the pick-up players were not eligible to play if they were not previously listed on an Alabama ASA roster. His “mistake” cost an entire team of 12-year-old girls what may have been a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a tournament of this magnitude. The complete lack of concern on the part of the ASA regarding the sacrifices of the team and parents is deplorable. Parents had arranged to take time off from work, had made hotel and other arrangements, and there were grandparents and other family members who had also made extensive travel plans to support this ASA event in our state. It is ultimately the job and responsibility of the ASA officials to make sure that the information they give out is 100% correct. In this case, they should have stepped up to the plate and done the right thing for these girls--- that is, let them play the game they love so much and have worked so hard to prepare for.

So did the Thrillers not get to go to nationals because of an ASA goof up or did they go and get kicked out for using older players.

Well, that is one side of the story, but I doubt it is all of the story.

If this is true, eligibility questions should have been addressed to Shirley Ray, the MS JO Commissioner not the commissioner from AL. How is the commissioner of AL going to know the status of a couple of girls from another association?

Yes, he made a mistake and apparently Mr. Murray made the team aware of his error as soon as discovered instead of them showing up and being turned away. From dealings our commissioner and president have had, I can tell you that the folks in Montgomery would have caught the error at check in. It is possible that someone from the staff had caught it while reviewing the rosters and raised a hand.

It is damn near common knowledge that a pick-up in ASA JO ball must be from the same local association at this level. Ultimately the responsiblity of the team to know the code and field a team. I do find it strange that there were not enough to continue on without the two pick-ups.

But that is a way different situation than the initial reports were..It went from two 14 year old kids and an 18 year old to there was a paperwork issue..Big difference..One they were trying to cheat..the other was a miscommunication.
