In June 2010, a settlement was reached between the CA Attorney General's office, CPYC, and CPYC's for-profit fundraisers.

Restitution:

- The for-profit fundraisers are jointly and severally liable to pay CPYC $200,000 in damages.

- CPYC and their Executive Director, Christopher Eaton, are jointly and severally liable to pay $900,000, as follows:
* To the CA Attorney General-$100,000, for attorney's fees
* Stayed penalties: $800,000 subject to Defendant's compliance with the terms of the settlement

When I read it, it is pretty much as CYPC laid it out. They used a questionable telemarketing firm. That telemarketing firm was probably collecting a ton of money for CYPC, which is a good thing as the charity seems to do good with the money they get. The problem is that the telemarketing firm was turning over something like 13% (3.7M revenue with 1.8M going to the telemarketing folks) of the funds they were collecting. Also a bit shady having the CYPC Payroll costs funded by NCI folks.

Charities do find it hard to turn down these deals, cause they need the money.

There are a couple of other things in the BBB post that show badly for CYPC, such as not including the charities mail address when literature was requested. Again, in the past I have seen charities duped by sophisticated telemarketing firms. When you are short on staff it is appealing to take the telemarketing firms offer to send out your mailings for you and hard to consistently check their quality.

To me the fact that the DA settled $1M liability for $200k indicates that DA was not really going out of their way to put CYPC out of business. Add in the fact that the telemarketers covered the $200k, and see not much was taken out of CYPC pockets. The DA did want CYPC to stop using these telemarketing practices, hence the $800k stayed penalties.

Their financial statements are available here: http://www.calpyc.com/calpyc.com/CPYCFinancials.pdf

You probably need to look a little more at the charity to weigh good or bad. From their website, I would say things that look good:
- Good board, good people
- Celebrity apprentice gave them $168k, true scam charities do not seek media attention like this.
- A number of of programs. It would be easy for someone to go see some of the programs they are involved in and ask how CYPC is involved.
- Lots of associations to other charities.
- Picture gallery actually shows a number of the board members including executive director participating in charity events. Hard to fake those.

Things that could be improved:
- No board minutes published. I do not like to donate money to organizations that operate in a closed fashion.
- Last financials posted were from '08.

The $100,000 was paid for the AGs attorneys fees by our insurance company. This was done as they realized it was cheaper than paying our own lawyers to defend it in court. It was part of what the AG wanted. If u have been a part of a lawsuit, or have an insurance company, you will understand how all that works. The 800,000 in question is stayed and is exactly as it was explain in post just prior to this. CPYC and myself paid no money whatsoever as a result of this suit and settlement. You have brought up some valid points about financials being posted on our website as well as board minutes. The 2010 audit was completed this week and will be posted. The 2009 audit had to be revised and will also be posted on our website in the very near future. Thank you for your well thought out post. Chris Eaton

it's easy to get caught up in all this money and other stuff and while I agree transparency is required I urge everyone not to forget what these folks are doing...molding young minds and bodies of female athletes through softball.

Say what you will about the org.'s past but don't forsake the future and the promise that having 3 Olympians and a U-o-P full ride scholarship pitcher now instructor coaching holds!

when it's all said and done - really we just wish the girls all the best! With any new team there are challenges. but that's what it's all about right!

Happy holiday weekend all, be safe

Im sure they will do great, but dont get so caught up in what people have done as players.

Crystal Bustos.... AMAZING communication skills with the kids and credentials to go with it.

Magic Johnson, one of best PLAYERS in the history of the game..... uh, him not so good as coach.

Scotty Brooks... looks to be a great coach in NBA, he was not a great player.... damn good one, but certainly not olympic caliber.

And this is not about these particular coaches at all... just saying dont get so caught up in players past performance to predict success as a coach.

Great point that is also applicable to instructors.

I also think players that progressed beyond their natural talent tend to make better instructors and coaches than naturally gifted ones.

Just a matter of time before ILB got his negative 2 cents in. It works the other way too.

ILB- obviously a marginal athlete at best, and an even more overrated coach. Just ask him.

I`ll take any of these coaches over ILB 7/365. Everyone of these coaches has ten times the ability to get girls to the next level, whether by coaching or just by the amount of contacts they have for the girls to be seen by the appropriate people. College coaches, scouts, etc.. Hey ILB are you on the board for ASA? Didn`t think so. Do your homework folks, find out who these coaches are, find out who they are connected with, find out how reputable they are with the people who`ll be recruiting your daughters. Bottom line, this isn`t rec ball, if you as a parent are serious about your daughter getting to the next level, get them in a situaution that will have the greatest chance of success. You might wanna check Lyndsey Klein and Michelle Granger`s success as coaches. I`ll put either one of them against any coach. Again, i just wish my daughter had this opportunity when she was younger. Sounds to me like alot of hatin` going on from rival coaches and organizations that know there time is ticking away. TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK!! Good Luck, Team California!!

Exactly where was all the hatin in his post? Seems to me he was very careful not to bash anyone while giving out some solid advice. The only hatin I see is from you towards him.

By the way, exactly what have YOU accomplished as a coach that gives you the right to be so critical of other coachs?
If you show no mercy... you deserve no mercy!

@1fann,

You are a moron my friend. I was VERY careful to not be critical of these coaches as I personally do not know anything about their ability as coaches.

Their record as players speaks for themselves, thats why I brought up other athletes that were great players but marginal coaches, and marginal athletes that made great coaches, to actually lend some credence to the point I was making, which you are obviously not smart enough to see.

As far as contacts.... again, get a clue. I dont care if Mike Candrea is your father, you aint getting an avg player a scholarship to Uof A.

No hating for them or their program...
