I for one am willing to concede the fact that California has produced and will continue to produce the best players in the country. That's just the way it is and there are no point arguing it. California is what the rest of us should be modeling our own programs after.
I would kill to give my DD the opportunity to play against some of the best teams in the country ON A WEEKLY BASIS. As it is, here in Northern Mississippi, we're lucky to get twelve teams for a tournament. We would run-rule half of them and the other half are the same ones we see over and over again throughout the year. We've had to travel to Birmingham, Vicksburg and Jonesboro, AR just to see some different teams. Plus, you have such a high rate of turnover that it's almost impossible to obtain a cohesive team on a yearly basis. My DD's travel team (12U this past summer) has had to recuit as far as 75 miles away in order to build a competitive team that could hang with the better teams in the USFA "B" World Series.
Don't get me wrong, fastpitch is growing quickly in this area. I just think that we are fooling ourselves if we think that our best teams could even "keep it close" against the top California clubs right now. I can count on one hand (after a gruesome accident that left me with only a thumb) the number of 18U Gold organizations in our area that have produced any Division I players.
But there's no use pouting about it people. Don't hate on CA. Strive to be better and the entire fastpitch community will be the beneficiary. Find a good coach and stick with him/her. Don't be constantly looking for greener pastures. Help your team develop a reputation as "the team to beat" in your area. If you can't get on "that team", find the next best and work to build that program into a contender.
My hat's off to California, especially after looking at the results of the 12U nationals in Alabama and seeing teams from other states that beat us up pretty bad getting beaten by teams from CA. Their teams are just better, folks. It's an undeniable truth.
