Grapettes Fall Showcase shout out

by LadyMagic83 » Fri Sep 30, 2011 11:11 pm

Just a quick pride filled shout out to all our Lady Magic 2011 Alumni as they begin their first collegiate fall ball season, particularly Cal. We've been waiting a long time to see those four girls together again and in Golden Bear uniforms. Best of luck everyone!

I want to give a shout out and some (+) feedback to the TD this weekend.

U14’s Fields were poor at Northgate. Watered and chalked every 3 games if you were lucky. I saw AASA and Mojo parents prepping the field before there game on sat.

Umpires were 50/50 at best, but just not very good at all and they weren’t kids either.

As quick as you are to collect gate fees, please try and be as quick to provide a quality softball experience for these teams, players and parents. It wasn’t that long ago where teams were avoiding certain tournaments.

This tournament for the 16s was also pretty bad.

Fields at Modesto Christian were not prepped at all on Saturday. Coaches from both teams would do it before the game. No chalk at all on the fields by game 3. Bathrooms were a super far walk from the outer 4 fields. Gate people chewed us out about getting there too early on Saturday morning for warm ups at 6:45am because the tournament help hadn't arrived yet. Fly balls were worse than Arnaiz and there was an infestation of flies because it is in the middle of an orchard.

And why was this called a showcase if there were no college scouts? At least none at the 16s fields. Who would come way out there anyway?

I hope our team never plays there again. :(

Baller.. have to agree the bathrooms were way too far away, they were clean, which kind of made the trek worth it. :D shold have had a port-a-potty or two closer for emergencies.
do have to agree somewhat about the foul balls, but did not see as many line drives as Arnaiz. Lots of balls landing on the next feild over, or flying over the snack shop.
Scouts? never saw a list of who was going to be there besides asuming that the colleg teams might go look around. Only saw ON Deck Softball there for a short time on Saturday. But heard there were some scouts (dont know what schools) at the 18's during the day.

I heard the grass was not mowed at the regional complex and the dirt was as crappy as ever. The Stockton area umpires have always been sub par.
Really sad to hear all of this. Thought they were serious about making things better for the teams.
How many chances do they think they will get?

Couple of observations on my part.

Louis and McNair fields were about as good as they have been in a while. Grass freshly mowed at both places, temporary fences up at both places.

Nets on backstops not up at Arnaiz, but the people doing wanted to start on Thursday... too close to tourney and they were told to wait till after the weekend. So hopefully that issue will be solved.

In response to all the break ins, there were staff that were assigned to the parking lots to walk them the entire weekend. I dont know if any cars were broken in to, but they at least had someone walking the lots.

Regional is only used at large tournaments. It is COUNTY OPERATED, which means they dont do jack to those fields. I am not sure what the tournament people could do, even if they wanted to. im not even sure they could hire someone to bring a big mower out there and mow the grass if they wanted to. Not defending anyone, just explaining those are county fields.

Modesto Christian has nice fields, but it is a school. It is what it is, and if bathrooms are far out, then oh well. The school isnt going to build restrooms to facilitate weekend tourneys. They use those fields because they have to because of the number of teams.

Scouts??? That tourney has been running for years, and if you think the 16u games are going to bring scouts, and then you are disappointed when you see none.... what do you expect?

Umpiring was actually pretty good for the most part in my book, and that is considering I had a major blow up with one umpire in our last game. That didnt change the fact that our umpiring at McNair, Louis, and Arnaiz was good in my opinion. And nobody is more critical of umpires than I am.

Huge tourneys cause problems. If you dont like the issues at the largest tourneys.... ?????

ILB, glad to hear they are putting nets up, should be a great help.
I agree MC is a school, but a couple port-a-potty's would have been nice. But at least there was a bathroom within walking distance.
and I thought the fields were actually in pretty good shape, and game times didnt seem to fall too far behind. a few minutes here and there when umps had to change but not as bad as it could have been.
didnt get to Louis but, Arnaiz looked like it was in great shape
Like I said about the scouts, I was surprised to see On Deck at MC, but I have seen them get around.
and you are absolutely right about large tourneys...... hard to please everyone all the time

It does not matter who, what, or anything? You go to a restaurant and order a steak, the waitress is rude, the service is slow and the steak is prepared the wrong way. Do you really care if the waitress boyfriend left her, they are short handed or the chief left his glasses at home. You will probably give it another chance? but then maybe decide to go somewhere else the next time.

Watching CAL and some of the other college games going on was relaxing on saturday. Enjoyed watching some of our area girls playing :)
Didnt watch much TB out at Arnaiz but did see a few scouts plus OnDeck there. Allisters are always great to say hello to. I really have nothing to say productive to this thread other than it was nice to see some college games here locally and some of our area girls representing. The hour or so I did watch TB , everything seemed pretty low key. Watched a few people get plunked in the head from foul balls....you know....the usual at arnaiz. I seriously hope that problem gets fixed.

Hey baller usually 16 and under don't get scouts there in the fall, Why the real good 16 and under teams play up in the 18's. Overall the games at Arniaz went pretty good and I did see the usual college coaches out there at times. Umpires did a great job at controlling game times and letting the girls shine and not them.
