I agree skarp... youre just a tad testy me thinks..

99% time umps must listen to outright lies and bs and unless we get lucky and someone crosses the line, we dont even get to toss ya, we gotta listen to it.

Here we get to respond. I think you might need to grow a pair yourself.

Or take some midol.

lol...midol...good one.

Hey, I'm always testy...so I'm an expert at recognizing it in others. You guys go berserk whenever anyone criticizes one of your own...whether or not you were there, and whether or not you have any knowledge whatsoever concerning the underlying circumstances.

Here you get to respond? Respond to what? Did somebody criticize you personally? Normally you're responding totally blind, and playing the patronizing prick in the process. I hate to break it to you (well, actually that's a lie  ), but some other people on this board have watched a softball game or three, are passingly familiar with the rules of the game, aren't legally blind, can recognize when an ump won't move to get into position to make a call, can recognize when calls are being clearly and consistently blown, and can recognize when certain individuals obviously aren't cut out for the job.

And every so often--now brace yourself, because this one is earth-shaking--those people might have a better take on events that they actually observed than you do from your high horse seven states away. Probably not often, but sometimes.

Yeah, but now that ump is here.

I has hedged my bet the ump was correct in his call...and.. now that we have his first hand account of it, the blue was right, the parent was wrong.. and once again we have zen and all is well and right with the world.

:P

Guess I got lucky.

Oh my bad...I didn't realize they were doing their best. That's different then....(queue Sean Connery line re "your best" from "The Rock"). So when's your next strike planned for?

Teachers (via their lobby) wrote the book on playing the "holy" card...as if their job choice is an act of self-sacrifice so monumental that they are 1) beyond reproach, and 2) entitled to compensation and benefits far beyond what they are actually worth by any reasonable measure.

Umps are rank amateurs compared to you guys (especially where compensation is concerned).

And luck is good enough, especially in a business where the odds are always 50/50 as to right or wrong. :D

Teachers? How the hell did teachers get lumped into this? Skarp, you must have been a really bad student, or else your DD is a really bad student, and you are looking for someone to for your shortcomings.

Teachers are constantly criticized, by students, administration, the media, the state government, the national government (especially the clueless like Dubya),the districts that they serve...etc. They do this for less money than most of you would ever imagine working for, in conditions most of you would never dream of (constantly being under the microscope), and all in the hope of passing along knowledge to generation after generation.

Most umpires I know will readily admit that they are not perfect.

I don't know any lawyers.

I am a teacher and if you think that teachers are above criticism, you are out of your mind. Teachers take a ton of criticism and most of us do our best. Most of the time we are expected to listen to criticism and not respond.

You sound a tad bitter. Find something important to focus your anger at.

Well, here in California.....teachers and administrators ignore laws we pass about English As A Second Language...fight along with their union so that they aren't evaluated by actual results....predict the apocolypse every time a budget cut is mentioned....and universally believe that the horrible CA education system can be fixed by paying the teachers more money....that about wrap it up?

This is not to mention the fact that many of the newer teachers have no clue how to teach and don't lecture....they just have the kids read text books and send them home with assignments.

Now that is some funny stuff right there....I don't care who you are, that's funny.

Just this past year I complained to the principal that:

1) DD's Physics teacher was riding a unicycle daily in class, while babysitting her granddaughter.

2) DD's Government teacher explained to the class that 9/11 was perpertrated by the United States Government, the brainchild of George Bush, the Twin Towers were rigged to explode by the Government, the planes were empty (all the people on board are still alive), etc. etc.

The response from the principal:

"I regularly go into these classes and I know these teachers, I don't believe any of this happened." Basically, my DD made it all up....with the corroboration of several classmates.

End result: NOTHING GETS DONE.

Then why don't you volunteer at your kid's school, or better yet go back and go to school for 6 years to teach. ??? You mean you don't want to go to school for 6 years to make $40,000 a year and have to work for 6 months for free while doing your student teaching (You would have to work about 50 hours a week for nothing..not even lunch money). You don't want to go through the 5 or 6 evaluations every year or pass the CBEST, the RICA, and the CSET? Maybe you don't want to spend thousands of dollars each year on things for your classroom that the distrct won't provide, like books, bulletin boards, rewards, computer games, videos, etc. The little things that make school a little more interesting but teacher's must pay for. Maybe you don't want to follow a scripted program that is defined by the district which tells you what page you are on at what time. You need to go into a fifth grade class with 36 kids crammed into a space for 25 and then write about how teachers and the union are such bad people. I urge you to go into your schools and volunteer or work for a while to get a perspective other than an outsider without a clue. Hawk 17, until people actually work as a teacher, they don't realize what a tough job it is.
